Why Do Men Have Nipples- Hundreds of Questions You-d Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini

3 stars (A great little book) - This is a great wee book to dip into for a laugh or even for knowledge on absolute trivia. I have placed a copy in the guest bathroom to amuse. Laughter on every page! 5 stars (why do men have nipples?) - A fun and informative book. This is about things you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask, medically speaking. 4 stars (The answers make sense!) - Delightful book, funny and informative. Facts combined with humor make this read hard to put down. ...

The Complete German Commission E Monographs- Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines

4 stars (Important work if one understands its place) - This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum. 2 stars (Huge Disappointment!) - I had hoped this book could be my benchmark for herbal information. What I found was a book that was hard to use with little useful information. ... Otherwise, Facts and Comparisions' Review of Natural Products is a better choice. 5 stars (The Most Solid and Dependable Work on the Market) - I have worked with herbs for many decades and have shelves and shelves full of works on Herbs and Healing. The German Commission E Monographs is still an often used Reference that in my oppinion belongs on everyone's shelf who works with Herbs. True, it does not cover all that the herbs are capable of and due to lack of proof, many wonderful herbs are not approved, BUT, and this is most important, whatever you find in this book is scientifically proven and you can believe it. I VERY strongly recomend this book, and the CD as well. Whenever you explore a new herb, or need to know facts, check it out in the Commission E Monographs. Then you have a very good outline from where you can start to work with, and together with other herbals get to know and experiment to arrive at your own conclusion. And that is not to mention the inclusion of interaction with other drugs, side effects, mode of administration, active composition for each monograph and different chapters that cover all that is important. A MUST for every practition...

Tarascon Internal Medicine - Critical Care Pocketbook- Third Edition

5 stars (So useful and weighs almost nothing) - This is an excellent white coat pocketbook for any student, intern, or resident in medicine or undergoing a required medicine rotation. I found it an invaluable light-weight, heavy in useful and important factoids. It never left my pocket during my rotations in medical and cardiac critical care. 5 stars (A handy reference for the sedulous clinician !!) - This pocketbook is an excellent resource and a quick reference for information in internal medicine and critical care. It is very convenient to use. 5 stars (An excellent mini-reference guide) - I am a critical care RN and have been in the business for over 21 years; there are very few critical care texts I haven't seen, and many of them I own. A colleague shared his Tarascon Int. Med. and Crit. Care Pocketbook with me, and I was hooked. In one small volume, easily fitting in a lab coat pocket are all the fun factoids you need on rounds , at the bedside, or when on the phone with the on-call or attending. It touches on all major pathologies you are likely to encounter, and outlines their treatments according to national standards and accepted protocols. For me, it has replaced carrying many of the laminated fact cards I had jammed in my pockets. ...

Current Medical Diagnosis -amp- Treatment- 2005 Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment

5 stars (Concise and Complete) - I'm a medical doctor currently working in indigenous comunities in southern venezuela. I attend to a wide range of medical and non medical problems. I have used the CMDT almost daily since working here. It has proven to be complete and concise, wich is a great feature when you need to pack your stuff and take a boat to the next comunity!. It is not a review, but it will give you the initial ideas to start investigating or treating. So if you're working in a relatively isolated area, where getting seconds opinions is dificult and takes time, doubt no more, this book will be a great help to you. 5 stars (Great Resource for Health Care Professionals. ) - This text gives quick and dirty coverage on an extensive range of topics. I keep it on my desk and use it often to research how illnesses are diagnosed, the signs and symptoms and treatment. 5 stars (CMDT vt Tierney,McPhee and Papadakis) - This is an excellent work which documents nearly 1000 maladies- their essential manifestations, general considerations, prognosis, clinical findings, the differential diagnosis and treatment. The work would be valuable so that the physician does not omit any important elements of the overall treatment plan. Optimal drug doses are cited together with annotated references, a general approach to the patient and common symptomatology. Surgical risk factors are outlined in considerable detail. The acquisition would be an important part of any personal medical library. The authors provide a current rendition with brand new references, up-to-date treatments/methods and medical technology. ...

Emergency Medicine- A Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition

4 stars (This book is an excellent learning tool!) - This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work. 2 stars (Downward Spiral on Autopilot) - *Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability. Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility. Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read. It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). The index seems somewhat disorganized, with references to isolated appearance of...

Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment

5 stars (Vital for Comp) - Simply necessary to understanding doctor reports. Only odd part is how the "patient" in the pictures looks like Saddam Hussein. Maybe he's filing a claim too. 5 stars (A must for professionals in disability law and medicine) - The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's. 5 stars (Nice Charts) - Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Both the plaintiff bar and the insurance community are well-served by this book. As for the medical accuracy of it, I'll take the AMA's word for it. ...

First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 CS Clinical Skills Exam

5 stars (first aid cs) - I paid a reasonable amount for the item and and i received it a few days later in great shape. There was no problem whatsoever. 5 stars (Medical Boards Review) - Great help for the USMLE CS. Has a wide variety of cases with differential diagnosis and work up plan for almost every possible case that will be on the test. Definately worth it! 5 stars (Water in the USMLE Desert) - I recently passed the Step 2 CS using this book and I must say that this was not the only reference source I used. The truth is though that it was the only source worth turning to. I bought the Kaplan book along with the FIRST AID but I soon found myself using only the FIRST AID. . It turns out that the Kaplan people have no idea what it takes to help students pass this test( I have known several people who have taken their week long prep course and failed the Step 2 CS exam)......yet the authors of the First Aid do!!! The First Aid has complete and reliable Patient NOTES for almost every scenario you could find on the test....Kaplan's book does not. The scenarios in this book are perfectly made so that you can practice with a friend or loved one.....Kaplan's book was not organized well for this purpose (if at all). In addition, after doing much research (hint, hint), I came to know I was better off using the First Aid to pass. On exam day, it was the book I saw most often in students hands (More so in the hands of American Medical Students than in the hands of IMG's!!). If you are a smart test taker......then you like to pass, to pass you would want to have the tools that the winners are using. For this reason I recommend the FIRST AID as a reliable source for USMLE Step 2 CS preparation. ...

Harrison-s Principles of Internal Medicine 16e Two-Volume Set

4 stars (Excellent reference for medical students) - Harrison's is a detailed, robust and in-depth text ideal for medical students. There is no stone unturned. The single book is rather bulky and I therefore recommend purchasing the two volume version. 5 stars (Gold Standard for Internal Medicine Text Books) - For the last 30 years of my medical practice I have bought Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine and I have never found anything better than Harrison's. Most of my talks and classes at the Medical School are based on the chapters found in Harrison's. Pain Free - A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain

5 stars (Success with "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue) - After two years of listening to my friends rave about diminishing the pain from sports injuries with the Egoscue exercises, I finally purchased my own copy. I was amazed at how easy the exercises are, and neck and shoulder pain I had for years diminished after only 10 days. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a drug free way to conquer pain. 5 stars (Really Works -- say goodbye to chronic pain) - Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time, 10 to 90 min depending on your problem, but the results are amazing. Everyone I've convinced to actually sit down and do E-cises for their chronic pain problem has experienced noticable improvement after just one session: weak knees, aching wrists, sore ancles, stiff neck & shoulders, headaches, and more. If you have any sort of nagging discomfort, even a minor one, give "Pain Free" a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised! Egoscue also has a radio program Saturday mornings in Colorado, which is how I first heard of this book, and clinics where you can get a personalized E-cise plan. 5 stars (Amazing Book, it really works!) - The book is amazing. I have a really bad back from working jobs standing on my feet all day. Someone told me about this book at work and I now do the exercises daily. The exercises require no stretching, 30-40 minutes only. The exercises use gravity to pull your body back into it's functional state. Using the book is like going to a chiropractor every day, only it does not cost several hundred dollars. Dr. Pete Egoscue is truly an amazing human being for sharing his knowledge. Once you read the book and use the exercises it will make total sense! The body is meant to move and be active, not to sit down all day due...

Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health

5 stars (At last, a good intro to epi book for students!) - This book is an excellent introduction to epidemiology. The authors present epidemiologic concepts in an easy-to-understand manner with interesting supportive examples from the fields of reproductive health and HIV epidemiology. In addition to the standard chapters on study design, bias, and confounding, the book also includes very good chapters on measurement error, causation, and screening, as well as tried-and-proven guidelines for a critical review of epidemiologic studies. This text should be very helpful to beginning masters and doctoral students in epidemiology and public health. ...

Medical Terminology for Health Professions

5 stars (Excellent Review Book!) - I used this book for the first semester of medical school. It gives a quick overview of each system of the human body as well as abbreviations commonly used. It's an easy read. A perfect complement for anyone needing a quick, but thorough, medical terminology overview. 5 stars (Most Excellent) - I purchased this book for a continuing ed class, and I'm impressed! Diseases, origin of words, word structure and usage is thoroughly covered and CLEAR. It also serves as a short course on anatomy as well. The writing is easy to understand, never overly technical. Illustrations are colorful and well-designed. The CD-ROM is nothing less than great. Even after the class, I am keeping this book as a reference, along with my Taber's Medical Dictionary. It will be appreciated in almost any setting, whether it be the medical transcriptionist's, billing, medical assistant's, or radiology department. It's that good. 4 stars (A great book, but not without flaws.......) - I love the layout of this book. It makes it easy to memorize new terms and to locate information. There are very useful vocabulary lists at the beginning of each chapter. The learning exercises at the end of each chapter easily help you pinpoint areas that need further study. However, the CD has errors. In the first 2 chapters, I have already found 3. For example, I typed in "histologist" as an answer to one of the questions and it said I was incorrect; that the correct answer was histologist! Then it incorrectly matched the pairs "poster/o" and "in front of, before", which is also incorrect. If you study the material throroughly you will be able to recognize these errors. At first I was also disappointed to find there is no answer key to each of the tests at the end of the chapters, but as is turns out, it just causes me to look for the answers to check myself, which just serves to reinforce the learning process, so I see it as a positive now! I'm still glad I got thi...

The Child Psychotherapy Treatment Planner Practice Planners

4 stars (A Starting Point and for Getting Unstuck) - These 'planners' are a great place to start when designing a treatment plan. They are the equivalent of a 'manual' that refreshes memory, assists with language and format- and gets you past the block. Its weaknesses lie in its treatment methods and assessment paradigm. The chapters as they delineate conditions and DSMIV categories were well chosen. Academic disorders received appropriate emphasis within the total clinical perspective. So what's missing? The advances of neuropsychiatry for one. The Ungame and the other published materials are offered in the back for purposes of purchase and review. The methodologies are limited to play therapy and techniques like the "ungame." The precision, as in, what and how such activities will yield is just too vague and rather dated. A nonverbal learning disability, for example, will need a qualitatively different play activity than a child with disorder of written expression, or autistic spectrum. No more one size fits all. The book suffers from a fixation on the psychodynamic approach which we know from research has not effectively met the needs for many disturbed kids. All patients, but more so for children, need successes to undergo change. Brain science has given us more precise tools to assess where those weaknesses lay and therefore a map to gain greater insight into the nature of the condition. Interfamilial discord, then, may be a result of poor communication or an inability to model behaviors- to treat all such dynamics similarly is generally a waste of time. Children have not got the resources to be in such confusing and often haphazard services. The basic product then can be used for limited support and I see that as a solution in writing treatment plans. I think a good updating would do the trick. 5 stars (An excelent source for terapists) - I have found this book of tremendous help as I have worked with children in clinical practice. I higly recommend ...

A Manual of Acupuncture

5 stars (Ginormous) - This tome is huge and full of great info for the practicing acupunturist and layman alike. Being the latter its size is a bit intimidating but well worth the money and time to read through. I also purchased the excellent flash cards by the same publisher. 5 stars (My fave acupuncture book, one of my favorite Paperweights) - Really a phenomenal book- the best, most complete, and authoritative book on acupuncture for students and practitioners. If you're a regular person, though, don't expect to be able to use this info - it's for professionals. My favorite things about it are the anatomical point location drawings, and the references to Chinese classic acupuncture texts. Since not all of these texts have been translated into English, this is a treasure. Besides that, it has other uses: My desk from IKEA isn't too sturdy. The place you put the keyboard has a pad for the butt of your palms (ergonomic, but not really), but that part is attached by hinges (because it's so important to hide the keyboard when you're not using it) and I put a lot of weight there, and today the second of its three hinges broke. It just hung there looking stupid. It seemed to be saying, "See, wasn't it worth it to spend three hours lost in IKEA wandering around looking for the checkout, grunting me into the car, putting me together, then dissembling me and moving me across town to your new house, and reassembling me?" My wife and I determined that screwing door jam deadbolt lock hole covers across the space would be the ideal engineering solution. But to drill into it, I needed a solid surface beneath it. I placed atop my chair seat a hefty trinity of Harrison's, A Manual of Acupuncture , and A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine, plus the more slim Dao of Chinese Medicine to create a firm work table. With the help of those books and their authors, I was able to fix my desk, and now I obviously am able to work again. In fact, I spent more time writing this ...

The Baptist Health Care Journey to Excellence - Creating a Culture that WOWs-

5 stars (Inspiring, Instructive, Energizing. Must Read.) - When Gordon Bethune, then President and CEO of Continental Airlines, wrote "From Worst to First" in 1999, executives in all fields were fascinated by his tale of how he turned around a company that many had given up for dead. He told the story and unquestionably his leadership was paramount in Continental's incredible success. Of course, as you might expect from a true leader, he shared the achievement with everyone in the organization. The tale of the turnaround, the awards, and the ongoing success helped thousands of executives and managers improve their operations. Now Al Stubblefield steps forward in his role as President and CEO of Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Florida. When he assumed this leadership position in 1999, he faced major challenges...but he and his team were already on the journey to excellence. The picture was bleak when the transformation began in 1995: patient satisfaction was at an all-time low, morale was dangerously low. The 5,500 employees of this largest healthcare organization in northwest Florida worked together to become recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of the 100 Best Places to Work, was recognized as an Employer of Choice?# , and received the Malcolm Baldrige Award in 2004. The story of how this was accomplished rivals the saga of Continental Airlines. The Baptist Health Care achievement ranks as one of the most valuable case studies you'll read. Stubblefield takes you on their journey, explaining what was done and how it was done. Examples and illustrations illuminate the text, making the path even easier to follow. Applying what you'll learn in these pages will empower you to move your organization, regardless of your field of endeavor, to substantially higher levels of performance. Read this book now...before your competitors do! ...
