Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN r Examination

5 stars (BEST NCLEX REVIEW BOOK) - I would highly recommend this book if you want to pass the NCLEX-RN exam on your first try. Information learned all those years in nursing school is compacted into this book in such a way that won't make you feel overwhelmed. Diseases and treatments are simply put. The questions at the end of each review tests what you've just reviewed and the rationales provided at the end of each section are excellent. This book is the best I've looked at and I am happy to report that I passed on my first try using this book as my primary studying aid. 5 stars (N-Clex Book) - Perfect condition and is a great study guide for the N-Clex. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (I passed my NCLEX !) - The book is great. I used it for just one week before my NCLEX and passed taking only 75 questions. ...

Robbins - Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease

5 stars (Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease Review) - This book is very well formated. It goes indepth to help the reader comprehend and retain the thorough information presented in a logical, organized manner. An added bonus is the CD that comes with this text that is also presented well and helps the reader see, by photos, exactly what has been covered. Having access to the on-line version enables the owner of this book to view the information from anywhere. I highly recommend this book. 3 stars (Good reference book, not a teaching one.) - This review is for the previous two editions. Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease is widely used in medical school as an introduction to the field of pathology. The book is well referenced and very detailed, and there lies some of its weakness. As a reference book it does not get any better, however the writing style rambles around an issue and leaves you with a feeling that you just do not know what you read. Pathology, for being a science, is fairly weak. The description of a disease is sometimes based on multiple facts which we do not understand as a whole. For example headaches are decribed in multiple categories, but the tratment for all of them is in most cases unknown. What works for one person does not work for another. Robbins gives you all the details, but in many cases fails to teach you the scientific pathophysiology of a disease. For example, instead of giving you a concise picture of each disease (ie asthma) it tells you about the HLA associations, and many other random details that have no bearing in patient treatment. Again, as a reference book is excellent. For learning the hard real meat of each disease, stick to Harrison's Internal Medicine and your basic science books. 5 stars (THE path book for ppl who don't mess around!) - If your pathology lecture handouts look like this: "toxoplasma - immunocompromised host - cardiac transplant" and you are thinking, "What causes what? Can professors...

Immunobiology

4 stars (a good start) - This is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to learn more about immunology. For the more advenced student, Bill Paul's Fundamental Immunology is a must. 5 stars (Best entry level book) - This book by Charlie Janeway is considered to be one of the best books for entry level students. His colleagues say Dr. Janeway cherished every moment that he spent in shaping this book since he took utmost joy in teaching and training students. Eventhough he is no more physically, his book will be read and remembered by almost every student in Immunology. The treatment of subject, arrangement of topics and the figures in this book are at the very best. I am sure that readers will be able to absorb the basic principles in a systematic way with sound experimental insights which will be with them forever. You also have the advantage of seeing the immune system as a friend as well as a foe. This book beautifully explains how immune system protects us from infections as well as creates major health problems when it doesn't work properly. This way of learning Immunology helps you learn the subject with big picture in mind. I strongly recommend this book for every student who takes introductory or intermediate level course in Immunology. After all, Immunology is one of the most fascinating scientific disciplines to work on. 5 stars (This book rocks!) - This is by far the most well written immunology text I have encountered. Even the most difficult concepts are presented in the most understandable manner. This book is very extensive in the material it covers and is highly recommended for an advanced undergraduate student or as an introductory graduate text. By far the feature most appealing to me are the extensive images and cartoons used in this text, used quite effectively to elucidate even the most difficult of topics. This visual presentation style combined with the extensive and highly readble coverage of relevant material make this a must have for any ser...

5 stars (Nursing 2006 Drug Handbook) - I have used this product for years in my nursing practice. I depend upon the "Nursing Considerations" section to assist me with patient teaching and care planning. 5 stars (Nursing - Drug Handbook 2006) - This is an excellent resource for both professional and paraprofessionals who are administering medications. Cognitive Neuroscience- Second Edition

4 stars (Not for those without background) - This book is not intended for the general reader, reader with cellular neuroscience background, but has a target audience of advanced undergraduate or graduate level students with relevant background. Also would be useful for the psychology professional without specific or with dated cognitive neuroscience background, or others intending a research or applied clinical career in the area. Appropriate background would necessarily be at least an undergraduate course in cognitive psychology, with additional help provided by biological psychology or a medical professional in neurology. Discussions of principles and mechanisms are at a "functional machinery" level and thus would not make sense to those without some previous training in those principles. It just isn't a basic text, thus, no glossary of basic terms is included. Yes, the material is both abstract and complex, but so is brain function, and we are just beginning to learn. There are very, very few textbooks that survey this area which only became a separate field of study sometime around 1986. Other reading material in the field consists entirely of professional level chapters in compiled and edited texts. The only other broad survey text that I know of is Marie Banich's book on the related area of Cognitive Neuropsychology. 3 stars (Additions to this book) - This book is more like a bunch of journals bound together. The authors introduce new words without previous qualifications. For example, in the chapter of binocular vision, they added spatial normalization and various other models, without telling what exactly they are! Also when I tried to find these terms in relatively basic texts I was unable to find them. Same was the case with internet. It is definitly for advanced learner. (I am doing PhD in neuroscience and still finding it very difficult)To clarify zillions of issue I have to sit with my mentor. Although she is very nice but still the discussion needs a...

Biological Psychology- An Introduction to Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience

4 stars (Great Introductory Text) - I have used both the first and second editions of this text in courses for first-year graduate students in a Psy.D. program. The text is clear, the illustrations excellent, as are the color overheads. This is at exactly the right level for students who will be clinicians using this information in understanding and dealing with clients directly (as opposed to researchers). 5 stars (good end of the second millenium) - I had the chance to give a overlook to prof. M.Rosenzweig text "Biological Psychology...", talking with my assistant teacher, I said, at last a nice, and good text for undergraduate student that are not going to be medicine student, but other profesional. This is the text for a change in the teaching of neuroscience; the result of it use will be clear at december 2000. the reasons for this: - clear use of history. - great use of design in each theme treated. - all the aids (cd, etc) are exactly what a beginnig student need. - the use of real neuroanatomy part, are perfectly complement by the pictures, diagram in the text. profs. M. Rosenzweig, A. leiman & S.M. Breedlove thanks from Chile. 2 stars (Please try again Mr.Rozenweig) - This book is a course textbook for my course, but to be honest I find it badly set out, espacially in the index where it's impossible to find anything. I know the guy's an expert in his field but the relevent information is hard to extract from the very dry tone. I've been tempted on more than one occasion to simply use it as a computer stand. This may sound like any other textbook but when you compare this to Kalat's book of the same name, the difference is unbelievable. As a student I'll take this rare opportunity to say 'good try Mr.Rozenweig, but I think you should take it back and work on it a little more' ...

Dosage Calculations- 7e

5 stars (great for new nurses and students) - This is a great student and new nurse medication book. 5 stars (Dosage Calculations review) - I've really enjoyed this book so far. Simple directions to refresh my memory on how to do the math/dosage problems. Only up to chapter 5 or thereabouts but very informative to that point. Would recommend it. 5 stars (For the math challenged...) - I bought this book for a math for nurses class. I took the class because even after all the math classes I've taken, math is still a struggle for me and this was a last effort before I start nursing school. THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL! For the first time ever, "I get it." I feel totally comfortable with calculations now. The book gives you several different methods to solving and you can pick the one that works best for you. It's easy to read and has great examples. 5 stars!!!!! ...

Williams Obstetrics Williams Obstetrics

5 stars (The Standard by which All Obstetrics Texts are measured) - There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics. Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics. Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals. Perhaps there are those who prefer their Obstetrics with a little voodoo. For those who want to know the most up-to-date scientifically based Obstetrics, Williams is your book! 5 stars (GYN&OB 's Holy Book-Kadin Hastaliklari ve Dogum oncu kitabi) - Williams obstetrics is a very distinguished textbook of obstetrics, and enlightens and guides the physician. Tarascon Internal Medicine - Critical Care Pocketbook- Third Edition

5 stars (So useful and weighs almost nothing) - This is an excellent white coat pocketbook for any student, intern, or resident in medicine or undergoing a required medicine rotation. I found it an invaluable light-weight, heavy in useful and important factoids. It never left my pocket during my rotations in medical and cardiac critical care. 5 stars (A handy reference for the sedulous clinician !!) - This pocketbook is an excellent resource and a quick reference for information in internal medicine and critical care. It is very convenient to use. 5 stars (An excellent mini-reference guide) - I am a critical care RN and have been in the business for over 21 years; there are very few critical care texts I haven't seen, and many of them I own. A colleague shared his Tarascon Int. Med. and Crit. Care Pocketbook with me, and I was hooked. In one small volume, easily fitting in a lab coat pocket are all the fun factoids you need on rounds , at the bedside, or when on the phone with the on-call or attending. It touches on all major pathologies you are likely to encounter, and outlines their treatments according to national standards and accepted protocols. Health Behavior and Health Education - Theory- Research- and Practice

4 stars (A classic in the field of health education theory) - This revised edition of the classic work by Glanz et al. demonstrates the benefits of poignant insight into the classic psychosocial and behavioral theories and how they relate to the field of public health and health education. Glanz leads the reader through most all of the major theories that apply to designing a public health intervention. In many of the chapters dedicated to individual theories, she includes extensive case studies of the practical implications of the theoretical work described within the main body of each chapter. Along with the other authors of this extensive compilation of classic health behavior and health education literature, Glanz develops within the reader a cohesive and fundamental understanding of theoretical approaches in order to make a successful, calculated, relevant, and effective public health education intervention. Simply glancing through the pages contained within Glanz's masterwork tells the reader of the depth and breadth of the field that she covers in compiling this work. The theories are diverse and the approaches taken by each author equally diverse. Glanz nevertheless manages to accomplish the improbable and weave together an outstanding work encompassing all of these models and theories. For the public health professional, student, physician, or educator, Glanz's classic text on health behavior is essential for a simple, yet detailed understanding of all aspects of health behavior. 2 stars (Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research, and) - As I waded through this textbook I at first felt that I had selected the wrong book for my teaching needs. The book is generally a review of current literature in the field of Health that would be an excellent resource for a graduate student who is about to tackle their thesis or dissertation. Contained within the chapters of this book is an extensive overview of what already exists in the field and certainly...

Emergency Medicine- A Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition

4 stars (This book is an excellent learning tool!) - This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work. 2 stars (Downward Spiral on Autopilot) - *Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability. Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility. Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read. It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). The index seems somewhat disorganized, with references to isolated appearance of...

Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment

5 stars (Vital for Comp) - Simply necessary to understanding doctor reports. Only odd part is how the "patient" in the pictures looks like Saddam Hussein. Maybe he's filing a claim too. 5 stars (A must for professionals in disability law and medicine) - The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's. 5 stars (Nice Charts) - Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Both the plaintiff bar and the insurance community are well-served by this book. As for the medical accuracy of it, I'll take the AMA's word for it. ...

Principles of Biostatistics

1 stars (the "never again" book for biostatistics) - Let me just start by saying I really like math, but this book did not help me to learn biostatistics at all. It doesn't explain the issues and equations very well and it has absolutly no answers in the back to check with yours, that's a whole other book...and that only has answers to the odds. Perhaps this would be a decent book for anyone who already has a handle on the subject and wants to learn more, but if this is your first exposure to biostatistics, like me, try another source to learn from, this book makes a difficult subject near impossible. 2 stars (Social scientists beware - research other options) - I'm a postdoctoral level biomedical researcher who has used many other biostatistics books before. This book is currently used for entry-level biostatistics at my School of Public Health. The bonus is that this book is geared towards epidemiology (eg, there is a chapter on rates and standardization), and I liked the CDROM that comes with the book and contains datasets. Unfortunately, the authors have chosen to derive many key concepts from probability theory. This is fine if you are comfortable with probability concepts. However, most students with background in social sciences are not: thus I found that this approach often adds an unnecessary level of complexity. Most of the examples are long-winded, dragging on from page to page - flipping back and forth is extremely frustrating, and the layout makes it difficult to grasp what the point of each example is. Also, the long-winded style makes this book a poor desk reference if you just quickly need to check a formula or definition. Sadly I have to say that I very rarely use this $100 book - there are plenty of more accessible and succinct entry-level texts that cost a fraction of this volume. And yes, Google is better learning tool than this book. 2 stars (Muddled presentation of concepts) - Principles of Biostatistics certainly presents all of the in...

Physical Examination of the Spine and Extremities

5 stars (A practical review of examination techniques) - Excellent simple to read text on how to examine the spine and extremities from the physiatry, orthopedic and neurologic viewpoints. This is a must for any practioner in the above fields especially medicolegal examiners and disability consultants. 2 stars (yuck) - Am i only one that really did not care for this text? Others are much more negotiable and useful such as Special Tests for Orthopedics. Save your money and check out other texts. 5 stars (Holy Smokes!) - Get it if you are looking for a good reference book to put on your desk that tells you how to locate various anatomical parts of the body (bones, ligaments, muscles, boney landmarks, various nerves and vessels too). Good pictures and clear explanations make this book a classic. Also liked "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works" for your overweight patients. ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...
