Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005

4 stars ( Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 Review) - Used together with Google Earth, you'll never be lost. Needs 3-D realism as this is the future of maps and GPS. And imagery will be read on the windshield without obscuring view of traffic. 5 stars (Excellent) - I travel quite a bit and the maps are handy to have on the laptop or in looking up directions prior. Personally I like to be able to look up the map itself and decide how to get there myself (therefore I do not use the programs directions feature). Maps seem accurate and up to date. The program locates places quickly. ...

Rand McNally StreetFinder and TripMaker Deluxe

1 stars (Rand McNally should have stood in bed. . .) - I don't think a thorough review of this is in order, because YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY IT. While it has some cute features, the main problem is that it DOESN'T KNOW ANY ADDRESSES of anyone I've tried to find. My own house has been here 50 years and the address is not in the program. '1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC' is not there (though 'White House' is). None of my friends' addresses are there. It seldom can even find an intersection ('no match found'). On the other hand, Microsoft Streets & Trips has 90% of the addresses I've asked it to find. Too bad, because the GPS interface on R-M is good and it's exceedingly primitive on Streets & Trips. 4 stars (What program are these people using?) - I am surprised to see the many negative comments on this product. The only issue I have had with it is that my GPS initially did not work properly. This was due to Windows XP recognizing it as a serial pointing device and had nothing to do with the software. I had the same issue with streets and trips. Once I got that ironed out, it has worked perfectly for me. I used it recently to plan a cross country trip and it worked fine. I was able to get back on track a couple of times when I took a wrong turn simply by using the GPS for reference. I see that some complained that you have to be online to use the program but this is not true. You DO need to be online to get current updates on road construction, but this should be done before leaving home where you have internet access anyway, not on the road. I think that perhaps people are expecting a lot from a program that costs less than 50 bucks. Take the tutorials included with the program, plan your trip at home or in the hotel, not on the road and use a little common sense and it will work fine for you. My only complaint would be that there is no option to update the street-level city maps via the internet. 1 stars (Dont Even waste your time with this Software) - Wh...

Route 66 Route USA 2004 Mac

4 stars (It works with OSX Tiger, but...) - Seller says this doesn't work with Tiger, but it works. All GPS road map doesn't give the shortest route and this is no exception. Mine came bundled with a GPS receiver that I was surprised worked very well. I just wish I can just install US roads without installing Canada and other non-essential that takes up hard drive space and slows down the search. I'm sure Canadians would want the same if they want to use this and not have to install US info unless they want to. Could be made simpler and faster intuitive locate of streets. I don't need every thing that says San Antonio like a bake shop when I am looking for the city map of San Antonio or just a street. 2005 is almost over and I don't see any updates on their website. Overall I would give this a nod if you want to bring your iBook or PB and use it as a GPS road map, otherwise, spend an extra $300 and get a handheld black and white screen GPS. 1 stars (Embarassing) - Route 66 should hang their developer heads in shame for putting this product out. The app seems to be a bare minimum port from its Windows version. The first indication of this is the ugly port of the "help" contents (which are an obvious attempt at mimicking the Windows help system, via a Java applet) UI - No keyboard shortcut to go between zoom in/out and drag. No way to convert GPS coords to decimal, or to search by lat/lon. The UI is a clunky artifact of the mid-90's, if not before. Type in a search and hit return... nothing happens.. you have to click on "Find". Compare and contrast simple navigation to Google Maps! Case closed. Speed - I'm running on a 1.33 ghz PowerBook, with the most recent Route 66 patch. Using 16mb of cache (in the preferences) doesn't help much. This is 2005.. surely you would expect a dedicated app to outperform Google map. Not this one. I am not kidding when I say this is slow. You may say "well, run it on a dual processor G5!"... and I would counter with "I want...

Rand McNally TripMaker Jewel Case

4 stars (Don't leave home without it.) - I have used tripmaker to plan a number of trips since version 1. I am up to Tripmaker Deluxe by Topics which may be prior to this version but they have not changed much recently. I find it very useful in plotting daily mileage for different route options. My wife does not wish to travel more than 6 hours a day. Tripmaker keeps me out of trouble. For instance, I had 3 days between Yellowstone and Glacier NP. With Tripmake I tried different routes to stop at the most desirable sites in between without overdoing the driving each day. It is this sort of "what-if" testing that makes it so valuable and then print up the final choices, get on-line, make reservations and go on the road. ...

Route 66 Route Europe 2004

5 stars (Route 66 best available so far) - Although this program is not as detailed on Europe as DeLorme Streets USA is of the US, which spoiled me , it is the best I have found and is very usefull. I found pathetic the reviewer's ridiculous complaint that he could not find Florence or Rome, etc. How Anglo-centric can one be? He was using American spelling! When in Rome, one does what the Romans do - use the correct spelling, not the Anglized spelling! Rome is Roma, for instance. Do Europeans use their language's spelling of, say, Houston, and impose their spelling (maybe Hustoni in Italian!) when they travel here? No, they use the spelling our country uses! By his logic, someone from China traveling in Europe should be able to type in the Chinese language version for Rome and find it!! He expects the program to know every single world language word for European cities and translate! This program was not made strictly for Anglos. Sure, if it was, it would be easier. He needs to buy Microsoft's more primitive European map software! 5 stars (Great software with logical user interface) - I bought this just prior to a trip to Germany and the Netherlands. We installed it and used it successfully with a Microsoft GPS receiver without even referring to any of the documentation, a testament to simplicity. Keep in mind you need TWO people in the car to use this safely unless you're going to pull over regularly, and this is hard to do on many European highways. It was extremely useful because many streets in Amsterdam either didn't have street signs or the sign didn't match our printed map. Also, for whatever reason, signs in Germany and the Netherlands for major highways tell you what cities each direction leads to, but not the direction (East, West, etc.) so if you didn't know the names of some nearby towns, you couldn't tell which direction to take. Watching the arrow on the GPS allowed us to determine, in most cases, which way to go (in some cases, they'd have ...

Rand McNally StreetFinder and TripMaker

1 stars (Buggy, Hard to use, Not as good as other trip finders I have) - To me it was a complete waste of time, too many discs and a difficult process to use them. If it were not for the Rebate I would have sent it back. 2 stars (Not bad maps, worthless directions) - The only value I have in this product is exporting a local map to my PDA. Other than that, Street & Trips is far superior. The automated directions are worthless. They don't pick the fastest route, they don't pick the shortest route, and they go fictitious near the end of the route. As an example, if I map a route from my office to my house, it takes a meander through side streets instead of travelling down the street I work on to the highway, then, when it does eventually get on the highway, the directions say to take the highway directly to my house, rather than getting off the highway and taking the 3 streets needed to do so. The map display shows the intended route taking a straight line through the woods between my house and the highway near the end as well. 1 stars (not much of a help) - This product seems like a waste of money to me. First, it was difficult to use the tripmaker - it would only plot a course from city to city, not from an address to an address. Then it was not easy to change the route that was suggested - I spent 20 minutes trying to have the route take me the length of Skyline Drive in Virginia before I finally figured out how to do it. And last, and probably worst, the maps seem very out of date. The date on the box of the software said 2002, yet the maps did not have the Midpoint Bridge in Fort Myers, Florida, which opened in October of 1997. "Streetfinder" made "Streets and Trips" look good. ...

Rand McNally StreetFinder - TripMaker Deluxe

1 stars (rand-mcnally tripmaker) - This is a piece of crap. You'll be better off with a CAA map and a pencil. 1 stars (No help available) - I picked up this software out of curiousity; already own Delorme Earthmate 2003, which is not real-time capable without a co-driver. This software is simply not capable at all. For example, I am looking at a street in the Baltimore area, 3615 Campfield Road, in street finder. I click the "Find" menu item and enter "Campfield Road" and "Baltimore" and I get the message, "No matches found" when I click, "Find Now." Whahuh? Going to the Rand McNally website does little good; there is no NO! customer support for this software. It seems that Rand McNally had made a "strategic decision" to let this product die. I will be returning the product to the vendor tomorrow with my complaints to try and swap it (and ten more bucks) for the recent Delorme product. Stay tuned. 1 stars (Awful waste of money) - I intended to buy MS Streets and Trips 2005. I'd used the 2002 and 2003 versions and wanted to upgrade. I saw the SteetFinder and TripMaker Deluxe offering and decided to give it a go. One word can describe this product - AWFUL. The first thing you notice is the clunky interface. Rand McNally may have a history of making great maps, but they can't write software. The interface is totally unfamiliar to anyone used to the standard Windows interface. I'm an IT technician, I work with all sorts of different software packages from different vendors, but this was without doubt the worse interface I have ever seen. The map looks great when the program first opens, but as soon as you zoom in the nice topo detail is lost. There is no option to display the map in topo / road detail as you get with Steets and Trips. The GPS navigator was a deciding factor in getting this software. If that alone had worked well I'd have been happy. Unfortunately it doesn't work well at all. Sure it will track your GPS position and give voice prompts as you dr...

Route 66 Route USA 2004

1 stars (Nearly Useless) - I purchased the Route 66 Street Network 2004 US/Canada to use for finding directions for myself and my drivers on delivery. I have found that it is nearly useless for finding addresses. It seems that updating the "2004" maps for Boise, Idaho has not been a priority. As a matter of fact, I find that naming it "2004" is very misleading. There are areas of this city that have been developed for over five years that do not appear on this program. In addition, many streets are incorrectly named, do not exist in the manner that your program shows them to, or both. On a daily basis I have to use MapQuest to find the actual routes when my drivers call to inform me that this program is again incorrect. ...

Route 66 Route Europe 2004 Mac

3 stars (Useful with a GPS, but not as accurate as one would expect...) - In our recent trip to Portugal, I took my Powerbook, a USB GPS and the Route 66 Europe 2004 software. Portugal seems to be one of the least mapped countries of the EU, but Route 66 did have all the main roads - albeit slightly outdated - in it. It helped to see our location on the map and even when we weren't able to follow the particular route the software plotted, we could tell we were in the general right direction. The GPS is a must! But, at least in Portugal, when you stray from the main cities, you are basically on your own. And in the main cities, things have changed so much from the maps in the package (I write this on Summer 2005) that you could easily spend a good chunk of time on a road just to realize you were really driving on a bridge over where you were supposed to be. So, for Portugal (only place I tested it), useful - yes, very much so. Definitive guide - no. ...

Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 CD

2 stars (not useful for the traveler) - Really disapointed that the new software has no voice directions when driving MS streets & trips is worthless unless you have a co-pilot. On company trips I cannot use unless I stop every mile to get directions. Graphic are good, MS support are useless and never respond to email 3 stars (A step back from 2004, but still good) - The overall quality is good but. - There are still many inaccuracies. MicroSoft doesn't really take suggestions very well. - The GPS interface is buggy to the point of utter worthlessness - The substitution of Slow/Ave/Fast for the speeds on various road types in lieu of the previous numerical inputs is a BIG step back as far as I am concerned. 5 stars (Just like wine, it is only getting better with the years!) - Tuesday, September 14, 2004 I receive my edition of Streets & Trips 2005 this week. I should mention that I've bought all previous versions of Streets & Trips since its debut. As a Paramedic in Montreal, Canada, since 16 years, I have to say that Streets & Trips as allow me to save at least 7 lives so far in my career, how? : I use it to know every single detail like one way streets, road closure, and new streets in the sector that I'm assigned witch allows me to stay on top of the latest development , IT'S SAVE US TIME TO GET WHERE WE HAVE TO GO WITH PRECISION and Streets & Trips delivers. ALL my colleagues that use Streets & Trips are saying the same thing, we have tried other software and all of us came to the same conclusions: nothing come even close to it. I can recall 7 emergencies's called that I manage to get on scene before the Fire department and the Police, 7 of theses emergency's where life threatening and because we where there faster because I knew the road closure and one way's, it has made a difference in our patient condition, a POSITIVE one. Edition 2005, just like wine, it is only getting better with the years! I personally recommend this software to ALL peoples; I ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2

1 stars (stupid and ridiculous) - why? cause it chokes up PROCESSING and RAM that's why! its full of bugs and freezes frequently. [...] if you want stability get win2000. its ridiculous how they keep releasing new operating systems every year. XP = Xtra Problem. 5 stars (WindowsXPHomeSP2) - I had WindowsME, but something went wrong with my computer and it wasn't recognizing drivers for stuff so I got XP and that fixed all that because XP has all the drivers you need already included in it. 4 stars (No Surprises) - Upgraded from Win 98 on laptop with no problems except for conflict with wireless module. ...
