Instant Immersion Mandarin Chinese Deluxe

3 stars (Not a replacement for a chinese teacher ... but can help you to improve your chinese skills) - I bougth this Set after 2 months of intensive chinese mandarin lessons, and it was hard for me to understand the method used by this software to teach mandarin. First, the method starts inmediatly with chinese caligraphy and not with pinyin. Second, some of the test that supose to help you to remember the vocabulary are really bad, for example the software dictates: "Ni hao" (hello/how are you) and if you write "ni hao" instead "Ni Hao!" you have a wrong answer, and you will spend your time until you understand that this software recognize capital letters and exclamation symbols in a dictation. Also one of the test ask for the opposite of the word ... and i don't have a clue where is the meaning of the word (in english), how could i know the opposite of that word in a chinese caracther Third, 3 Cds are just audio CDs with no more information than the others cds with the sofware. Fourth, one cd it's a game! Five the others Cd could be in just one! A+++: However, this pack have good graphics, a good software for voice recognition and a good chinese--->english dictionary. But doesnt replace a good chinese teacher. Lack: It doesnt have an english --->chinese dictionary (very important), just have like four lessons (common expressions, clothes, animals, etc). Doesnt have a tool to help you with your chinese caligraphy (i have another software that includes one, and it's really useful) Starts toooo fast with chinese caracthers. It's a funny software.. can help you... but it's not for beginners and not for advanced students PD: Sorry... for my english ... my first language it's spanish, From the south of the world Carolina from Chile 1 stars (Where to start?) - Wow, I wish I had read these other reviews before buying Instant Immersion Mandarin Chinese Deluxe . I'm a beginner trying to learn the language because my girlfriend is Chinese. But when I put the CD i...

Behind the Wheel Chinese Mandarin - Level 1- Learn to Speak Mandarin Chinese Quickly and Easily- 8

5 stars (Exceptionally Excellent) - I have purchased and successfully used Behind the Wheel Chinese/Mandarin. It blows me away that a person buying a car course in Chinese would complain about having a written text, Pinyin version or otherwise. Any true scholar of Chinese will tell you that learning to speak the language correctly is the key. Written Chinese is a whole new ball of wax and can actually detract from the learning experience for speaking purposes at least. Imagine trying to read Chinese while driving. Give me a break. For that reason, Behind the Wheel Chinese is simple, straightforward, easy to understand, easy to use. The course has two excellent native Mandarin speakers, a male and a female and an American instructor without an accent who explains everything. Both voices repeat twice so that you can duplicate the difficult and challenging sounds of Mandarin which uses different 'tones' to convey meaning. You learn all of this stuff in the comfort of your own car without having to look up or read anything. If you really want to learn to speak Mandarin, I recommend you go out and buy this course immediately. After you have learned to speak Mandarin at a conversational level from the course like I have, then go out and learn to write it if you will. Not me. I'm thrilled enough just to be able to speak and understand Mandarin at a normal conversational level. 2 stars (Almost but not quite) - There is no written version of the words and phrases on the CD's. A Pinyin version would make this set exceptional, and accompanying Chinese characters would make it even more useful. As is, this version depends solely on memorizing sounds and their associated meaning. Furthermore, similar sounds cannot be compared via their written counterpart. A lot of good work and design wasted for lack of "blueprints." Without additional instructional materials, even taking notes is all but impossible, for there is no way to associate the sounds on the CD's with any...

Chinese Mandarin I

5 stars (One of the most remarkable learning experiences in my life) - The CDs will make you think about all the time you wasted in ineffective foreign language classes (previously, I thought I had no aptitude for languages). These CDs do what they say: 1) you learn grammar implicitly. It's remarkable - I can say a new sentence in the correct word order without consciously thinking what the word order should be(it justs sounds right). 2) rather than translating from English, you learn to "think" Mandarin. For example, rather than learning to count 1, 2, 3...., you learn to order 2 beers, then 8 o'clock, 3 o'clock. You learn to know the numbers rather than trying to count in your head. Despite my limited vocabulary, while in China, I was able to have passable conversations with complete strangers. It's hard to emphasize how much fun this was. Some asked if I taught Chinese in the US and most assumed I had much more language skill than I actually do. Both in the US and China, most say "you have a good accent." To compare, with 6 months of Pimsleur, I was able to develop more language skills than I ever received from 6 yrs of High school & College German (I don't think I ever had a conversation in German). With other language tapes, I found the need to constantly rewind. Pimsleur's approach eliminates the need for this. Also, in contrast to the many inaccurate Mandarin phrasebooks, Pimsleur's CDs are accurate in translating both the flavor & meaning of words. One seeming downside to Mandarin I is its apparent overemphasis on numbers. However, the reason for this emphasis becomes apparent when you start Mandarin II. In addition to the general utility of numbers, Mandarin II shows that months, days of the week, and many individual words are based on numbers. Hence, this emphasis is justified. Downsides: 1. While the CDs are effective in teaching the language, a written booklet would be extremely valuable as a later reference. Because there is ...

Instant Immersion Mandarin Chinese 2 CD-ROM Set Jewel Case

2 stars (Okay for speech, but doesn't help with Chinese characters) - This software is okay for learning to say a few basic words and phrases. The variety of activities makes it more interesting than a phrasebook. But it won't help you if you want to learn Chinese characters, which are the more interesting and important part of the language. If you want to learn to read Chinese, you'll need a good textbook and maybe a Chinese reading & dictionary software product like Clavis Sinica. 2 stars (keep shopping) - re the first cd, talk now: The girl enunciates well but speaks with a tiawanese accent. In one case, (the ankle) the girl gives the wrong (tiawanese?) word for the body part rather than the mandarin word. The guy slurs his word endings a bit. The cd only has a handful of words, perhaps what you would expect to learn in the first week of a standard college class. The cd makers neglected to pay an artist to draw the pictures that correspond to the sentences so good luck there as well. I think they had a not particularly gifted first grader do the scribbles. The second cd, world talk, does NOT pick up where the first one left you but jumps ahead by an unbridged leap. There is no real help provided. you find yourself learning which picture matches with which sentence without ever learning what they are actually saying. Futhermore, the second cd is boring and not at all engaging. surely there is better stuff out there. 4 stars (Amazon has their reviews mixed up.) - The Amazon review is for Talk Now! Mandarin by EuroTalk....but the product is Mandarin Chinese by Topics Entertainment. Ignore the Amazon review. ...

Talk Now- Learn Mandarin - Beginning Level

4 stars (Good for learning few hundred words) - This program is decent for absolute beginners - just to introduce you to few hundred words. Don't count to be able to communicate in Chinese with this program. You'll learn how to count to twenty, colors, names of some food itesm, clothing items, how to tell time and few basic expressions. What does work for this program is games, which are fun to do and help to retain the information. The program though seems almost better suited for kids than for adults - well, just so you can say you know few words in Chinese. ...
