The Four Loves

4 stars (CS Lewis, The Four Loves ) - A very deep and thoughtful work, from which there is much to be learnt. It is not the type of work that can be read in haste or in one sitting. The discussion on the four loves are much too intense to be glossed over. It is well suited not only for the deeply religious but also for anyone desirous of a greater understanding of the many and important attributes of this one simple word Love. 5 stars (Four Loves by C.S. Lewis) - This is the finest book I have ever read on love outside of the Bible. Lewis' insights on friendship define what true friendship is and cautions us that those who we call friends for lack of a better word have value and admonishes us not "to desparage silver because it is not gold". He encourages us that if natural love is to see eternity, it must be committed to Charity Himself. An excellent book and profitable to everyone. 5 stars (Affection, Eros, Friendship, Charity: The Four Loves ) - C.S. Lewis wrote this book late in his life after he had experienced love with a colleague in writing. He gives sound advice that I believe applies to a broader base than his usual Christian readership. The four loves are: Affection, Eros, Friendship, and Charity. Each type of love has a chapter dedicated to a fuller explanation. My favorite section is the one he wrote on Friendship. I think he is honest about limitations we place on who becomes our friends. Many believe any two people can become good friends, when in reality, this is just not so. Friends are people who share some vision or passion in life. That vision or passion is the cement of the common bond. Lewis had deep friendships with interesting people, such as Tolkien. He even elaborates on his own experiences with such companions. Charity is the true form of love. Charity is the deepest form of giving our feeling, freedom, and even our very selves, to each other and finally, to God, whom Lewis calls "Love Himself." There...

Swimming to Antarctica - Tales of a Long-Distance Swimmer

4 stars (Amazing story) - The only reason I am giving this 4 instead of 5 stars is that it didn't include any pictures. I would have liked seeing some pictures taken during the author's many amazing swims. This book tells the story of a girl who didn't fit the typical athletic profile - she is chunky and doesn't appear to be an athlete. This couldn't be further from the truth. Her unique body makeup (she is the same density as sea water and her temperature is different from most people) allow her to withstand immersion and exertion in mind numbingly cold water. The reader learns about Lynne Co'xs many accomplishments - English Channel records (as a teenager!), swimming in heavily polluted rivers (she punched through a dog carcass as she swam), and most of all swimming in seemingly deadly cold waters (the crowning achievement of her carreer). I was left completely awestruck by this story. 5 stars (Lance Armstrong's Peer as an Endurance Athlete...) - ...May be Lynn Cox. As detailed in her gripping 2004 autobiography, Swimming to Antartica. In 1972, at age 14, yes, 14, she broke the record for swimming the English Channel - male or female. Then when someone broke her mark, possibly by cheating, she came back the next year and broke it again. She was the first human to swim the Strait of Magellan - the wild waters off Chili that have sunk hundreds of ships -- and the Bering Strait, the latter while dodging icebergs: without a wetsuit. During the swim from the Atlantic to the Indian oceans around South Africa's Cape, her frogman speared a tiger shark as it attacked her. And yes, she swam to Antarctica - going just a mile, but in dense, 32-degree water that felt like plastic to swim through, and caused short-term damage to the skin's nerve endings. These adventures all get their own chapter, in clear, direct, detailed prose that puts you right next to the athlete doing these very dangerous feats. Lynn has some Lance-like, superhuman physical traits. Afte...

Byrne-s Complete Book of Pool Shots- 350 Moves Every Player Should Know

5 stars (350 Moves Every Player Should Know) - I have been playing pool for twenty years and this book introduced so many concepts that I don't know why I didn't research this book out sooner. This book single handedly improved my game dramatically. If you shoot pool and are looking for a deivice to train you from the begining to advanced stages look no further, this book is spactacular! 5 stars (It's an arms race. You need this weapon to keep up.) - Byrne's pool books & videos have set (and raised) the industry standards for many years now. As a professional pool instructor, I read everything I can, and have strong opinions about what's actually worthwhile, correct, and genuinely helpful. Byrne's new book has moved to the TOP of my list of books I recommend to my students, from a playing perspective (this is not a science book). I don't care who you are, you don't know all the stuff in this book. And if you're at a level where you know a good percentage of what's in this book, you're also at a level where learning even one useful new thing is worth the price of the book. If you've been playing for a while, this book will open your eyes to a lot of new possibilities and understanding. If you're in your first year or two, you might do better by first focusing on fundamentals of form (find a good instructor) and getting a grasp of how balls behave and why (look for Byrne's videos - Volumes 1 & 2). You don't know what you don't know. Now, with this book, those who have read it will know many things you don't. 5 stars (Great billiard book for all skill levels) - A former city of Cincinnati, College and military Amateur Champion, I've spent a good part of my life walking around a pool table. And I've played all the important games from One-Pocket and Bank Pool to Nine Ball and Straight Pool. More recently, and in semi-retirement, I decided try and take my game to a new level. That meant learning a few new tricks. There's no other author on the game of pocket billiards ...

Byrne-s New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards

5 stars (All I Needed) - I have only been playing for about six months, so I am not too good. If you are like me, and you want to improve your game, buy this book. It is fun to read and extremely helpful. I probably won't be able to master every technique in the book in ten years, but the two or three things I have learned have taken my game to a whole new level. I love it. It is all I need. 5 stars (The bible of pocket billiards) - Robert Byrne's New Standard Book of Pocket Billiards is a key resource in any billiard library for beginners and experts alike. I believe it is the best overall book on pocket billiards extant. Although it does contain a few inaccuracies and instances of scanty detail, overall, it is an invaluable guide for learning fundamentals of pocket billiards with well written explanations and instructive illustrations.... 5 stars (Robert Byrne is brilliant!) - This is a book I come back to time and time again. As someone who plays off and on, I often refer to the book when pool is 'back' in my life. This is a keeper! The diagrams, the history, why shots do what they do, how to play the angles, you can't beat it. Its both informative and entertaining. ...

Under the Black Flag- The Romance and the Reality of Life among the Pirates

5 stars (Fascinating Overview on the Life & Times of Pirates of Old ) - Most people think of pirates as romantic anti-heroes. I sure do, having been fascinated by pirates since I was a little girl. In the nonfiction book UNDER THE BLACK FLAG, author David Cordingly debunks the pirate myth to tell us what real 17th and 18th century pirates were like: uneducated, drunken seamen who were very young and very violent. Writing in a clear, easy-to-read style, Cordingly explores pirate life (mostly within the Caribbean), from historical raids to shipwrecks, pirate loot, and executions. There's even a chapter about female pirates. I found this entire book fascinating, and read it as quickly as I would read a fiction novel. Moreover, I often stopped to read aloud certain passages to family members, just because the passages were so interesting and full of historical significance. For instance, I had no idea that pirates sacked Panama or that an earthquake completely destroyed Port Royal in Jamaica, a big-time pirate hang-out. The most popular passages, however, were the descriptions of exceptionally nasty (yet curiously inventive) means of torture carried out by sadistic pirate captains on their poor victims. You have to read it to believe it! Anyway, UNDER THE BLACK FLAG is quite an eye-opening experience. It's history and adventure and fascinating biographies all rolled into one. Highly recommended! 4 stars (very interesting) - Good book, would buy it as a gift for a young person or a casual reader. Not to academic, but not to kiddie either. Lots of interesting info on the real deal of pirates. Worth the money. 3 stars (Interesting Subject But Poorly Organized) - My favorite part of the book was the afterword, which quickly summarized the book's main theme - the difference between the reality of pirate life and the romantic mythology created by books, plays and movies. There are many other interesting topices covered. For example, the difference between b...

Winterdance- The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod

5 stars (great insight weather you mush or not) - Excelent read, easy to follow, lots of humor, I shared with non mushers to and they loved it. Shows people things most will never know or experience. Great book, you won't be able to put it down!!! 5 stars (Just a great read....) - I picked this up on a clearance table somewhere....what a bargain. This is one of the best books I have come across - I started it on a road trip with my husband and was soon asking him to turn down the radio so I could read passages to him. It is funny, enlightening, scary, energizing and awe-inspiring. I envy Mr. Paulson and his ability to chuck everything and answer his inner voice's call for adventure and a different way of life. Truly one of the greatest books I have ever read...will become a permanent addition to my library. 5 stars (Amazing Book) - I can't believe I had this book for about 3 years before I finally "found time" to read it. I haven't laughed so hard since reading "A Walk in the Woods." And I cried, oh, how I cried. Dogs are such amazing creatures and those who haven't experienced a dog's love are truly missing out. ...
