Catholicism for Dummies

5 stars ( Catholicism for Dummies ) - AWESOME BOOK and I am not nearly done! Just the mini history of Catholicism in the appendix has been very interesting and a good learning experience for this cradle Catholic. 5 stars (very reliable) - This is a trustworthy book written by Catholic clergy who understand tradition, dogma and doctrine, believe it, and can present it truthfully. It's great for just about anyone, rather cradle Catholic looking to learn a little more or non-Catholic unfamiliar with the faith. I read it around the time of the election of Pope Benedict, and I learned a great deal about the heirarchy. I also thought other sections, such as the one on the vestments, were interesting. These are things Catholics don't learn much about because they are not of major consequence. But don't let that fool you - there is plenty of important information in this book. A great summary of Catholic beliefs! Stay away from Idiots Guide to Catholicism and get this book instead. :) 5 stars (Great Beginner's Book) - This book is a great read for anyone. If your thinking about becoming Catholic, know someone who is, or you just want some more information on the Catholic religion in general then this book is for you. I found this book to be very informational and easy to follow. If you're looking for more information on the general traditions and guidelines of Catholicism, this is a wonderful starting point for that. Overall, it's a great addition to your library. ...

Puppies for Dummies

5 stars (super helpful book) - We were going crazy with Lilly, our now 4 month old black lab. I ordered this book, it arrived super fast and it has saved us from complete insanity. It is so packed full of tips and timesavers! I highly recommend it to all new puppy moms and dads! 5 stars (Finally The Help I Needed :)) - I have had dogs all of my grown life and just added another puppy to the mix. Wish I'd found this book years ago. It makes training your puppy to be a great companion a cinch! Great advice. 1 stars (unrealistic) - While it would be great to feed my puppy only holistic dog food, keep him tied to me all day long, and not take him for car rides or leave him alone until he was an adult, it is completely unrealistic. I don't want to raise a spoiled dog, but I plan on playing tug-of-war with him on occasion and even hugging and kissing him before I leave him for the afternoon, against this book's advice. The author also only touches upon some of the most important and basic training info I was searching for by buying this book. Save your money! ...

Knitting for Dummies

5 stars (I love it) - This is a great book. Very clear, and it gives you great ideas. I would recomend getting this book along with "Stitch n' Bitch" because the two together cover all!!! 5 stars (Great book for knitters of all experience levels) - I LOVE this book. I have done crafts for 20+ years, but never really got into knitting. A year or so ago, I decided I wanted to start making sweaters. This was the first and only book I bought to teach myself. I found the directions very simple to understand and very straightforward. This book teaches BOTH English and Continental stitching and incourages the reader to learn both. If you start doing Fair Isle, being able to do both English and Continental comes in very handy. I'll admit, I really didn't read the entire book page my page. Instead, I use it as a reference that is never far from where I am knitting. The book not only gives the patterns for many "fancy" stitches and different cables, but takes the fear out of these. I recommend this book for all knitters. 5 stars (Excellent book) - This is an excellent book, it explains both Continental and English style of knitting and shows how to do many things in detailed illustrations. It teaches all of the basics and some intermediate designs and it makes it all simple to learn. I am so glad that I purchased this book. I already knew some basic knitting but I needed a book that explained the rest of what I did not know. ...

Wine for Dummies

5 stars (A very good start) - He very good start if you want to know more about wine. A must for everyone who loves wine and wants to have a clear overview 5 stars (Gets One Into & Clarifies A Difficult Topic) - Wine is complex with all its grapes and regions and producers. This book helps to simplify and compartmentalize much of this complexity into useable, workable info. Start with grape types and clear away the snobbish smoke of much of the vino knowledge, this book delves into wine lists when dining and labels when purchasing. Extremely useful are chapters are serving and storing and collecting from major wine areas. Least useful part which could use more is pairing with food. One might benefit also from reading Andrea Immer's books which to this reader clarify and provide food pairing info in superb style and manner. 5 stars (Good Intro without the Snobbery) - There may be more in-depth wine books out there, and there are certainly more academic books out there on the subject, but most of them scare the average reader with their pages of pomposity and attitudes so high and mighty that they induce nosebleeds. But finally there's a wine book for amateur wine enthusiasts who don't have a wine cave handy or a budget to road trip the Napa Valley or Bordeaux. The books takes the reader from the very basics of wine, its history, and all the terms used in wine making and wine tasting. What's particularly helpful is how the book is divides wine into geographic chapters so the reader can get the feel for the region, which helps immensely when differentiating the specific wine types. What's also quite nice is the humorous, down-to-earth attitude of its authors, who see wine as something to be enjoyed by all, not just an elite few, and, in fact, the book is peppered with "Snob Alerts" to warn readers of particular wine trivia that the nosebleed, blue-blood types like to toss about. The book does need some updating, especially with the pricing and vintage i...

Horses for Dummies

4 stars ( Horses for Dummies ) - This is a great book. I liked the content and was able to get good advice on riding and taking care of my horse. It had been some time since I had ridden a horse and the review was very good for me. This book is great for beginners or advanced riders. 4 stars (BACK IN THE SADDLE...FOR THE FIRST TIME!) - HORSES FOR DUMMIES does an excellent job of introducing the horse lover to the ins and outs of horses and horse ownership. The book paints a fairly accurate picture of all that is involved in getting started, covering the gamut of gadgets and tack necessary, a variety of veterinary issues, housing, feeding, training...you name it. A good, sound preliminary overview. The one drawback to the book is that the authors go way overboard with trying to help the reader assess whether horse ownership is a realistic option. It seemed to me that they had perhaps seen some severe situations where people bought horses that really shouldn't have and they then vented their frustrations into this book. As a result they, in some cases, use a sledgehammer to swat the horse fly when a fly swatter would suffice. If taken too literally the book would be titled YOU DON'T REALLY WANT TO HAVE HORSES, DO YOU? and drive everyone except diehard cowboys away from even considering owning horses. Yes, owning horses is a big responsibility but I have only heard of a few extremely rare cases where horses truly suffered as the result of unprepared owners. However, I see this as a minor thing. Read the book for the great information that it imparts and don't let the stump speeches about whether you are ready to own a horse by the authors get in the way. THE HORSEMAN 5 stars (Very Informative) - Having been around horses most of my life, but never owning one, this book was a great help! I purchased it along with "The Whole Horse Catalog." Both books were on the same "page", if you will, regarding very important aspects of owning a horse, such as feeding, shoeing,...

Resumes And Cover Letters For Dummies

3 stars (Maybe it's me, but...) - Maybe it's me, but I don't think there should be a book out there teaching dumb people how to get jobs. We work with enough dummies everyday, do we really want more of them clogging the HR pipeline? That said, the book is probably well written, and would make an excellent addition to Getting Off Welfare For Dummies. ...

Su Doku for Dummies Sudoku

3 stars (OK, basic introduction to really neat logic puzzles) - Good introduction to SuDoku but lacked depth on techniques for solving more advanced puzzles. 4 stars (Great intro to Su Doku with helpful instructions) - This is a good book if you are new work Su Doku puzzles. It has good definitions of terms, but it also has a few typos in the instructions which caused some confusion. I had to reread the sections a couple of times before I understood what was being said. However, once past that, I was able to begin working the puzzles. A good variety of easy, medium and difficult puzzles. I am not too please with the paper content; it does not hold up well to eraser marks. 5 stars (A Good Book to Start Solving SUDOKUS) - I first came across SUDOKU in May of this year.I have been a puzzle enthusiast since I was in High School ,over 55 years ago;and have seen a myriad of puzzles and games come and go.I really have no favorites as I enjoy them all. From the time I completed my first SUDOKU,I knew there was something different and special about these puzzles. No special knowledge or special abilities are required for anyone of any language, skill or age to do this puzzle. This is similar to Jigsaws and Crosswords;and the reason these puzzles have become universally popular, probably outstripping all other types of puzzes.I believe we will soon see speed competitions taking various forms including TV. Checking out the Books available,I found a few already published, and without doubt there will be a flood of them in the near future. You will see among my reviews,a few others I have checked out. This book is just as good as the others to get you started. It covers the basic methods and hints to help you solve them. In addition,it gives you 240 SUDOKU puzzles. In all fairness,to date ,there is not really much to pick and choose among the half dozen books at this time. However,I would not at all be surprised to see more books shortly;describing more sophistophed and sp...

Dog Training for Dummies

4 stars (Not just for Dummies) - This book was both useful and interesting for old hat dog owners and new ones as well. I initially found it at a friend's house and while flipping through the chapters I decided I needed one for myself. Though I am very familiar with dogs, the behvioural sections helped me get a handle on my new puppies' quirks and demands, particularly the section on typing your dog's profile. They were a new breed for me, and rescues, so I appreciated the explanation of behaviours I was not familiar with. I liked this book enough to send it on to my parents when they recently got a new dog as well. I did not find the homeophatic information very helpful at all, however I don't think the inclusion of that information outweighed the potential benefit of owning the book. 3 stars (Mixed bag) - I thought the parts of this book that talked about training were, for the most part, quite good. The authors give clear instructions and reasons for their practices. For example, don't say "no" to your dog; tell him what you want him to do instead. If he's jumping, say sit, for example. Be consistent. Reinforce commands. Say commands only once. I could give more examples, but you get the idea: sound, sane, and humane advice. The advanced training sections started to lose me a bit. I found them tedious after a while. Although the authors are very experienced with all aspects of caring for dogs, I thought they were reaching a bit with their nutritional and medical advice. They talked about homeopathic remedies as though they're proven treatments. They're not. Anecdotal evidence is not the same as statistically significant results from controlled studies. Their opinion on vaccines seemed dangerous and unbalanced. They have too much confidence in their alternative nutrition and treatment methods -- maybe they have some effect, but they're not perfect. A well-fed dog could still get fleas and infections and communicable diseases. After a while, t...

Excel VBA Programming For Dummies

5 stars (A Must) - Best beginners book available for Excel VBA programing and I have tried them all!!! 5 stars (Worth the money) - I bought this book because of good reviews, and was quite pleased. I have some of a background in programming (decent at PERL, a tiny bit of visual basic), but had never done it in excel. I wanted to learn VBA for excel to automate my data analysis for a psychology experiment I am running. I knew that the actual program I would need to write would be fairly simple (just some contingent branching that averages response times for like responses together), but I needed to know the way to reference everything for excel and excel objects. In under two days (and 150 pages of this book), I was able to write the necessary code. Dummies books are usually good, and this one is great for ease of reading and clarity and organization. 5 stars (Quick, Accurate, Not Just For Dummies - A Trusted Author) - I needed to quickly do a macro for a large Excel workbook. Although I have programmed off and on for thirty years, I have done little with VBA. One night with this book was all that it took to learn the basics; and I completed the project the following day with only brief use of one other VBA reference book. As noted by another, Wallenbach is the best-known author of books on VBA for Excel and writes with a pleasant style - friendly enough but little of the silliness of some introductory books. The book is written for those with good familiarity with Excel but with little or no prior programming experience. It seems also to be a good quick-start or overview for those with more experience. Code samples are quite short and can be downloaded from the web. There is no CD. You must have Excel 2000 or later. (The book itself was published in 2004. VBA for Excel has changed little since the Excel 2000 version.) You may want Wallenbach's 1018-page "Excel 2003 Power Programming with VBA" or other general reference for heavy-duty VBA work, although of cour...

Six Sigma For Dummies

5 stars (Understanding the Power of SIx Sigma) - This book is an excellent guide for people who want to know, what is Six Sigma? The authors inform you that Six Sigma is more than a bunch of statistics in a production environment, but also a culture that can be applied to any organization. There is a section; however, that covers the statistical tools used by Six Sigma professionals. They provide important information on how to use the DMAIC model and what it can do for your organization. It covers the key points of implementing Six Sigma and how to measure processes by looking for the "vital few" variables". I highly recommend this book for anyone considering implementing Six Sigma or those who want to know more about this powerful culture. It is well written in terms that can be easily understood by all. 5 stars (Useful for Learners, Teachers & Leaders) - I work as a manager and Master Black Belt at a Fortune 100 company. This book has been very useful in my training of others. I just finished teaching a Six Sigma Black Belt course in which I referred students to this book to reinforce their learning and deepen their understanding. It has transformed the way I teach Six Sigma as well as the way my students learn it. Not only am I suggesting that BB's and BB's-in-training get this book, but I'm also recommending that leaders who have GB's and BB's on their staffs read this book. It gives enough information for leaders to understand what their Six Sigma staff are going through in the trenches. And it also provides leaders with enough education to ask meaningful questions. (Nothing is worse than an uninformed leader trying to lead Six Sigma resources!) 2 stars (Doesn't have a target audience) - If you're just curious about what six-sigma is this is a good, easy to understand, book. But it teaches you little that can be applied. I'm in a company that is begining a six sigma effort and I am assisting the black and green belts in their work. I had wanted...

FileMaker Pro 7 Bible

5 stars ( FileMaker Pro 7 Bible (Bible (Wiley))) - I have used this book to learn enough for advanced programmong of a complex Filemaker database. Reading it from front to back and highlighting what I need to know/do is extremeley easy, enjoyable and clear. I love this book. Simple, well-written and complete. 4 stars (An excellent revision to the series) - The FileMaker Pro Bible series has been consistently good, much better than many others in the line, such as cloying, annoying PhotoShop Bible. Schwartz and Cohen do an excellent job of compiling material on using FileMaker Pro 7. Yes, you could find it all in the FileMaker Pro Help file on the FileMaker site or in a various news groups, not as mere regurgitation, but as a well organized compendium But they save the reader the effort and frequent trouble of doing so. The material is well-organized, coherent and free of the forced amateurish attempts at humor that mar so many technical books today. In short, if you use FileMaker Pro 7, you need this book. I've been using FileMaker since its release . . . and the progressive volumes of this series have always been at hand. Jerry 3 stars (How about a break for both versions - book AND pdf?) - I have never paid such a hefty fee for an ebook but I will this time for one reason - when travelling, I like to have the reference with me without the hefty book. However, I'd prefer having the book on my desk for when I'm in the office. Why not give a break to those of us who would like to purchase both? ...

Microsoft Office Project 2003 Bible

1 stars (WHERE'S THE ACCOMPANYING CD????) - Beware, the book may be good, I just start reading it, but I can't look at the examples from the "accompanying cd" because Amazon hasn't made it available to me. I've written them 3 times and still no answer. Buy this book from the bookstore. Also, this ebook is very restrictive. I don't know if I can view it from other computers and it only allows me to copy 10 selections in 7 days, after that no more cutting and pasting.....beware of the limitations. I give this 1 star, not for content but for delivery and restrictions. spearsjunk@hotmail.com 5 stars (Very Useful) - I'm an engineer who uses Project in my work and this book has been a great help. Every time I've had a problem getting the software to do what I wanted this book has provided a clear and consise explanation that helped me get through the problem. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Project for major projects and doesn't have time to waste finding an answer on how to get the software to do what you want it to. 1 stars (e-books a nightmare, beware the pdf e-book format!) - I recently bought this book in electronic format to save time with delivery and then also to give e-books a try. Afterall, they have benefits, like little storage requirements, portability, you can search them through, etc.. Well, it all turned out to be a nightmare experience :( First of all there is Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management) which obviously limits you from opening the ebook PDF on any computer you like. Each time you want to read it on a different computer, say at work, you must go through a painstaking activation process. Excerpt from adobe store: "Adobe Reader 6.0 ebooks cannot be moved from machine to machine, as the security of the file is tied to the machine on which the ebook is downloaded." Not only that this takes all your time and energy, frustrates and enfuriates you it also does not work it turned out. I got server timeouts, "excuse us, but the server will be up runni...

Search Engine Optimization For Dummies

5 stars (Wonderfully written and easily understood) - I just finished reading the 'SEO for Dummies' book from cover to cover. It is certainly one of the best 'dummy series' books that I have ever read. The author managed to write about a complex subject, keep it interesting and make it very understandable. If your website is 'off the chart' and you want to make sure it gets 'on the chart' and moves up in rank, this book is for you. For those thinking about a building or updating a website read this book first. For those of you that have a great site but it doesn't have a satisfactory rank this book will help you make needed changes. I can hardly wait put his ideas to work and see what they will do for my website! 5 stars (Comprehensive for all but SEO professionals) - A great book with overviews of search engines, how search works, how to find important keywords, how to optimize your site for search engine placement, back links and more. Covers the material in a very readable and easy to understand format while also going into sufficient depth to lend meat to the subject matter. Covers the topics in a logical flow with cross referencing to other portions of the book. Of the books available on the market, I highly recommend the Dummies book be added to your library. 4 stars (A book for all web designers) - Most web designers forget the necessary elements to get their web sites picked up by the major search engines. This book gives you the inside scoop on how to get search engines to index you properly. Filled with great examples on what to do AND what NOT to do. A must for your web library. ...

GPS For Dummies

5 stars (Great Book for beginners and advanced users) - Tons of good information to get started with using a GPS, goes beyond the basics. Really a very good starter book. Once you get this book, I would also recomend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching" and the Owing's "GPS Mapping". With GPS for Dummies and my Garmins 60CS manual, I was able to hit the trail in a few hours. With the other books as complement, I have become very accurate locating waypoints when I do horse riding or 4x4 trips. 2 stars (Dangerous in the wrong hands) - A book that sends you out in the field with a GPS but without the knowledge of how to use a map and compass too. If you reall are a "dummy," you should start with the basics first before relying on an electronic device that can leave you stranded. Better choices would be the Land Navigation Handbook (new edition) and Wilderness Navigation (less detailed). 5 stars (Highly recommended.) - Excellent book. Highly recommend it for all beginner geocachers as well as advanced geocachers. Doc Beamont, Texas Geocacher ...

Golf for Dummies

3 stars (not really for dummies) - I am as dummy as you can get them as I bought the book to prepare myself for my first golf lesson. However, in my opinion the book is not really for people who know nothing. It seems more suitable for people who already play some golf, but who want to know a bit more around it (famous players, nice golf courses,...), but less suited for people who want to save some bucks by preparing themselves for serious golf lessons. Often the 'Dummies' books are really funny, but in this one I thought the jokes were often too artificial. Perhaps golf is no fun? 3 stars (Not everyone is a dummie) - This book (I have the original version) is entertaining and useful in that it includes the whole golfing experience, from selecting clothes to on-course etiquette. But it is not anywhere near the only golf book you'll need. The photography used to illustrate technique is not as clear as it might be. The authors use a lot of space dropping names of celebrity golf pros they know and telling amusing stories. I found myself always looking for more detail, more physiology and more physics. Golf for Dummies is very good for neophytes, but not enough for those who become enthusiasts. 4 stars (Good Golf Book) - This book has many tips on how to play better golf. The pictures are good and easy to follow. All in all a pretty good golf instruction book. If you really want an awesome book on golf instruction get: The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better by Patrick Leonardi isbn 1933023090 This last book showed me how to improve with techniques that are much easier to follow. My scores are now finally improving. In fact, every month since using this book, my scores have improved by about one stroke per month. I highly recommend it, nothing else on the market like Leonardi's book. ...

Soccer for Dummies

5 stars (Great intro) - This is a book, especially for parents who are trying to figure out the game and people who'd like to learn more about it. 1 stars (A complete waste of time) - This is the first time I have reviewed a book for Amazon. I am doing this because I consider this book to be 100% garbage. If you are looking for a book full of annoying cross references (i.e. see page 118; see page 73) and for a book which repeats the same quotes or phrases in different chapters (was there really no editor?) BUY THIS BOOK. Also, if you are looking for cheap tid-bits and trivia about the US women's soccer team (was it really necessary to write three times about one female ripping her shirt off after a goal?) BUT THIS BOOK. If you want to have a general overview about the rules of Soccer but want nothing of strategy, technique, training, then BUY THIS BOOK. (or why not just go to the FIFA website and download the same rules which make up 50% of this book) But if you want to learn how to play or coach soccer, forget it. This book is a COMPLETE waste of time. 5 stars (Excellent intro for newcomers; solid content for veterans) - Carries on the excellent tradition of the "for dummies" books: offers solid content and information for veteran soccer afficionados while organized as a well-written, well rounded introduction for the novice. Gives comprehensive overviews about all aspects of the game -- rules, strategies, the world of professional soccer (the leagues, tournaments, events), as well as an excellent history of the game and its development. It's refreshing to see a book for newcomers that doesn't strip things down - there is a wealth of well-researched information here that is useful for the experienced fan or participant. ...
