The Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells- The Ultimate Reference Book for the Magical Arts

5 stars (International Magic Cookbook) - This book is a treat in many ways. It is a recipe book for those interested in the world of magic and also a study of magical beliefs of many cultures. There is so much to look at in this book that everytime I open it I find something new and fascinating. Sit by a fire with an herbal tea and enjoy this well researched work! 4 stars (Simple and easy) - Very easy to use and understand and with several alternatives for the same spell. Will enjoy using this encyclopedia constantly. 5 stars (a wealth of information) - If you bought this book and paid for the pound you would get your money's worth! An amazing about of work on folklore in it's most elemental form. Finally a serious work that is not full of the "play stuff". This book is valuable for anyone wanting to learn, advance their level of their crafting or even get to the lore and roots of what they are doing. Amazing work especially great for paranormal writers. ...

Encyclopedia Britannica 2006 Ultimate Reference Suite Win-Mac DVD

5 stars (Completely Revamped) - The Encyclopedia Britannica 2006 (established in 1768) is a completely revamped product. Its interface is intuitive and uncluttered. It is far more fun to use. For instance, it now offers a date-based daily selection of relevant articles. The search box is persistent - no need to click on the toolbar's "search" button every time you want to find something in this vast storehouse. The new Britannica's display is tab-based, avoiding the erstwhile confusing proliferation of new windows with every move. Most importantly, articles appear in full - not in sections. This major improvement facilitates finding relevant keywords in and the printing of entire texts. These are only a few of dozens of user-friendly alterations and enhancements. The 2006 edition is a breakthrough. The Britannica seemed to have finally got it entirely right. The Britannica provides considerably more text than any other extant encyclopedia, print or digital. But its has noticeably enhanced it non-textual content over the years (the 1994-7 editions had nothing or very little but words, words, and more words). The Britannica fully supports serious research. It is a sober assemblage of first-rate essays, up to date bibliographies, and relevant multimedia. It is a desktop university library: thorough, well-researched, comprehensive, trustworthy. The Britannica's 80-100,000 articles (depending on the version) are long and thorough, supported by impressive bibliographies, and written by the best scholars in their respective fields. The company's Editorial Board of Advisors reads like the who's who of the global intellectual and scientific community. The Britannica comes bundled with an atlas (and 287 World data Profiles of individual countries and territories), the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, classic articles from previous editions, eleven yearbooks, an Interactive Timeline, a Research Organizer, and a Knowledge Navigator (a Brain Stormer). Merck Index- An Encyclopedia of Chemicals- Drugs- - Biologicals

4 stars (MERCK'S REVELATIONS) - This edition of "The Merck Index: An Encyclopedia of Chemicals, Drugs, & Biologicals" shows remarkable improvement over its predecessor. Boasting of diverse groups of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it is a success in its own right. There are just plenty to be explored! The book brims with accurate up-to-date information. Pharmacists, Medics, Chemists, Biologists, Physicists, Agriculturists, and many other professionals who work with elements, compounds and mixtures will find this book very useful. It is revised, and is complemented with detailed descriptions, which include molecular formulae, molecular weights, as well as the percentage compositions of constituent chemicals in a compound or mixture. It is a valuable reference tool. 5 stars (Excellent chemical reference!) - This book must be the most organized reference book I have ever used. Its so fulfilling to be able to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it. Includes a common name index, chemical formula index, as well as registry numbers, therapeutic categories for drugs, useful tables, and organic chemical equations. highly recommended! 3 stars (one of those things a chemist shouldn't be without) - While not the first reference book I would recommend for a general library, it is certainly one a library or chemist's office shouldn't be without. This is an encyclopedia, with abstracts on zillions of chemicals. Is this the most authoritative book on the planet? No. If you want that, go read Chem Abstracts. If you want an handy reference which will give you a pointer in the right direction for information on chemicals/drugs/biologics, then this is for you. Got chloroform in your waste water and wondering how it might have inadvertently developed from miscellaneous stuff dumped down the drain? Wow - acetone + bleach powder catalyzed with sulfuric acid = chloroform, with citations. Not always the most useful, but definately a good resource. ...

Merriam-Webster-s Spanish-English Dictionary

2 stars (Poorly designed screen functions) - Although this dictionary's contents are extensive, the screen functions are relics from the DOS era. They are laborious and clumsy. To find a word for difinition, it has to be spelled perfectly, there's no list of proximations to the word entered. Changing a word selection is also clumsy especially in the thesaurus when the cursor doesn't show up in the entry slot. If someone knows of a better software, I'd sure like to hear cause this thing sucks!! Maria McGowan 2 stars (Good basic reference, lousy interface.) - The definitions and thesaurus cross referencing are very good. The user interface is quite honestly shameful. Software companies got away with this years ago, but there are now accepted standards for windows user interfaces (e.g keyboard short cuts are missing). Integration with Word 2003 is weak. Numerous bugs and exceptions and very slow. 5 stars (Great product with a lot of features) - I had an old version of this software (2.0, I think), which requires Mac OS 9 or classic. This new version runs in native OS X. I agree with other reviewers: the interface is ugly, but it does the job. I like the audio capability. English is not my first language so I find the pronunciation feature indispensable (don't forget to install it; it's not included in the "easy" install option). Another great feature is the "Defining text contains" search. You can find a word by entering the words that are in the definition. What is the word that denotes the noise a duck makes? You can easily find that, of course, ducks "quack," not to mention that you will also find all kinds of ducks -- the blue-winged teal, the bufflehead, the eider -- and all sorts of duck relatives and even duck dishes. You can also find words that rhyme with duck: cluck, guck and many more. Other ways of searching include usage paragraph contains, forms a crossword, homophones, cryptograms and more. I don't understand why these features are not prominently ...

Encyclopedia of Counseling- Master Review and Tutorial for the National Counselor Examination and St

5 stars (A Godsend) - I was desperate for information to prepare for my licensure exam. This book was extremely thorough, accurate and incredibly helpful. I had gathered numerous books and notes to study from, but most of what I needed was right in this book. I recommend it to anyone studying for psychology, counseling, social work, or other related licensure/certifying examinations. 5 stars (Study for NCE) - This is an easy to use, easy to understand tool to help you do your best on the NCE test. You really need the CD's " Vital Information and Review Questions for the NCE and State Counseling Exams" to use along with this book, to get the maximum benefit. It seems expensive, but you need to consider how much your counseling license is worth to you. 5 stars (All you need is this book and a couple months...) - This was the ONLY book I studied for the NCE. I did not dig up my notes, and I did not reference other texts. I read it cover to cover twice, marking the questions I did not guess right the first time and returning to them until I could get them right. The best part is the explanations. There were actually a couple of questions in the book that the author got wrong or that were disputable. On the whole, however, this book is all you will need to study and pass. The test makes you feel like you brought a violin to a flute concerto, but your score will confirm that the book was the correct sheet music. ...

Rand McNally StreetFinder and TripMaker Deluxe

1 stars (Rand McNally should have stood in bed. . .) - I don't think a thorough review of this is in order, because YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY IT. While it has some cute features, the main problem is that it DOESN'T KNOW ANY ADDRESSES of anyone I've tried to find. My own house has been here 50 years and the address is not in the program. '1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC' is not there (though 'White House' is). None of my friends' addresses are there. It seldom can even find an intersection ('no match found'). On the other hand, Microsoft Streets & Trips has 90% of the addresses I've asked it to find. Too bad, because the GPS interface on R-M is good and it's exceedingly primitive on Streets & Trips. 4 stars (What program are these people using?) - I am surprised to see the many negative comments on this product. The only issue I have had with it is that my GPS initially did not work properly. This was due to Windows XP recognizing it as a serial pointing device and had nothing to do with the software. I had the same issue with streets and trips. Once I got that ironed out, it has worked perfectly for me. I used it recently to plan a cross country trip and it worked fine. I was able to get back on track a couple of times when I took a wrong turn simply by using the GPS for reference. I see that some complained that you have to be online to use the program but this is not true. You DO need to be online to get current updates on road construction, but this should be done before leaving home where you have internet access anyway, not on the road. I think that perhaps people are expecting a lot from a program that costs less than 50 bucks. Take the tutorials included with the program, plan your trip at home or in the hotel, not on the road and use a little common sense and it will work fine for you. My only complaint would be that there is no option to update the street-level city maps via the internet. 1 stars (Dont Even waste your time with this Software) - Wh...

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science - Technology

5 stars (This Encylopedia is one for the angels) - There is something almost comical about the thought of reviewing the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. It is an amazing work, such a stunning compendium of erudition in such a wide array of difficult and rigorous subjects that the ordinary rules and reasons of writing a review don't really apply to it. Reviewing any other work would function with the assumption that you *had* actually read it; that you were familiar with it; and also that you were implicitly prepared to face intelligent rebuttal with regard to the opinion you offered and the comments you made. However, when it comes to The Encyclopedia, it would require more than ordinary intellectual stamina and range of interests to *read* it for review and the same notion applies to the possibility of rebuttal: if you are enough of an intellectual giant that you can talk intelligently about the sum of what is in The Encyclopedia, then who is there to rebutt you? Who is going to come out of the woodwork and dissaggree with what you have to say about it? No real 'revue' is possible or meaningful when talking about it, but some things can be said about it and nearly all those things are golden. My experience with The Encyclopedia goes back to my days in highschool, more than twenty years ago, when I regularly went to the library between classes and used the encyclopedia to answer the questions that occured to me at random. Back then, The Encyclopedia was a godsend for me, something that had answers to questions to that my teachers didn't have the time to answer. It was a browser's book for me; the kind of text that offered the cross-referenced characteristics of intertwined questions leading to other questions leading to yet other questions that exactly foreshadow the hypertext concepts that run the web today. Article after article pointed toward things that I would later find out more about only in adulthood, long years ...

The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions

4 stars (Encyclopedia of Window Fashions) - This book has great ideas and beautiful pictures and drawings. It is, however a little outdated in my opinion. Would like to see a revised edition by this author with more up to date styles. 5 stars (EASY TO GRASP!) - I often see beautiful decorating books but as soon as i put it down I realize I did not absorb anything No so with this book! One page has tie backs One page has cornices. You see them all together and get an idea of what you like You come away with it all sorted out mentally! 5 stars (Over 1000 decorating ideas) - Blending current, popular styles with extraordinary new approaches, the fifth edition of The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions is a must have for designers, from beginner to expert. With more full-color illustrations than ever before, this book presents myriad window treatments for any room in any home from the most simple to the most challenging. American Horticultural Society A to Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants

4 stars (Beautiful Book) - This is a beautiful, coffee-table worthy book. The information is detailed and thorough. However, I am just starting the landscaping process, and was hoping for a book that I could study to decide WHAT I want to plant; possibly a book divided into categories. This book is organized entirely alphabetically. With this book, you must already know the plant and can then get any information about it you want. It will be useful once my landscaping is finished. 3 stars (Encyclopedia of Garden Plants) - This is an excellent book only if you know the name of your plants. If you are looking to find out what the name of a specific plant is, the book is just way to huge to go through page by page to find out its name. 4 stars (AHS A-Z of Plants) - An excellent work. Full of detailed photos and comprehensive and thorough information on most varieties you are likely to encounter. Easy to reference and locate responses to your gardening questions. Downside is the book is a little heavy and a little expensive. ...

WorldBook Encyclopedia 2005 2 CD Set

3 stars (Good Product.) - World Book 2005 is a good software product. The content is not as good as Encarta 2005 in my experience. It is just not as complete or encompassing. Of course, no comparison to EB 2005 textual content need be made as EB is obviously much more academic. That being said EB 2005 is horrible software and ruins the experience. WB 2005 is fast and well organized. Good for casual browsing as it has a random browsing feature which Encarta 2005 does not really have. Encarta 2005 has a Visual Browser but you have to already have an idea of a topic your interested in. I am glad I purchased this product. If I want further info on a topic, I can search it on Encarta as well. I really would not purchasee Encyclopedia Brittanica 2005 software. It is just way to slow. See my review of the Deluxe cd version of that product. I gave it a one star. ...

National Geographic Maps- The Complete Collection

1 stars (What a disappointing experience!) - These are some of the most wonderful maps in the world, especially from a historical geography perspective. But of what use are they in this format? It is difficult to search, impossible to browse effectively, and there is no way for an educator to present these images in any sort of useful format. I would suggest buying this collection only if you have hours of free time with nothing better to do than switch back and forth between 8 CDs for mild (but frustrating) entertainment with a nice glass of wine. 1 stars (Difficult to use) - I purchased this product thinking that I would be able to sail around the world like a National Geographic adventurer. Unfortunately, I have been unable to use it at all. It appears that you need to place each disk into your computer as prompted to view the contents. I want to be able to stick the disks in once and have my computer bring up the information when requested. Maybe I didn't give it a good try, but I have not been able to see any maps at all. 4 stars (NG Maps and XP) - I have had this collection since 2002 and never had a problem until today: I was aghast when I inserted the install CD into my spanking new XP setup, only to be informed by the dreaded popup that 'National Geographic Maps Will Only Run Under Windows 95'! Then a furious search turned up the following on the NG website: "XP has the Program Compatibility Wizard which can help XP run programs developed under previous versions of Windows. To activate this feature: Click on the Start button. Go to All Programs then Accessories. Select the Program Compatibility Wizard. Select for it to look into the CD drive. Choose for it to run in Windows 98/ME mode. Another alternative would be to make a dual-boot partition." The first solution worked instantly for me, even without setting it to a lower screen resolution when given the option. I love this collection. Yes, the maps are scanned. Yes, the disk swapping is extr...

The Encyclopedia of Country Living- An Old Fashioned Recipe Book

2 stars (good gift) - I bought this for myself, but would not do again. A much to large tome, very confusing at times and boring. Maybe for a serious farmer it MIGHT be interesting, but for the average consumer it is to dry and boring. I find myself using it as a reference on a rare occasion for some recipe related item, but mostly collecting dust. Might be donated to the local public book source soon, not worth the shelf space in my opinion. Spend your precious cash elsewhere. 5 stars (Country life) - Great information for anyone wanting to get back to the basics, Carla has mastered the country life, mixed with family, experience and farmlife passion. 5 stars (Something for everyone) - Ignore the title....this is a must-have for every home. Ms. Emery doesn't just tell you how to live off the land or live simply. She gives cooking/canning info, gardening advice, how to select-care-for-butcher livestock, care for the sick, housekeeping advice, even how to deliver a baby. This book has useful advice for every homemaker as well as "doomers" who want to prep for complete self-sufficiency and people who want to go back to a simpler lifestyle. ...

5 stars (Perfect book for amatuer and pro of jewelry making) - Book is full of everything you want to know about jewelry making. This book is about making "real" jewelry not stringing beads. You learn about how fine pieces are made. Good book to see if you are really interested in this craft. Great reference book. 4 stars (Great for Jewelry makers) - I am just beginning in beaded jewelry and purchased this thinking it would help me. It is a wonderful book and great instructions however, it is not for the beader. This book is very comprehensive on many techniquies such as casting, stamping, inlaying, etc. While it was not for me, if you are interested in other types of jewelry making, this book is for you. 4 stars (encyclopedia of jewelery making techniques) - This book is a very useful guide for those who wish to set up at home or in a small retail business since it provides the reader with enough information to confidently tackle all but the most difficult jobs. This book can also help the adventuresome to expand their scope by providing a lot of technical info which allows one to expand one's range of thinking. ...
