Radical Evolution - The Promise and Peril of Enhancing Our Minds- Our Bodies -- and What It Means to

5 stars ("Enhanced Humans": Never Sleep and They Have Artificial Vision.) - Nanotechnology, communication technology, information technology, robotics, drugs, biology, and genetics all come together in this new book. I had a quick read and heard the author talk at some length on the radio about the book and the subject. From the book and from listening to the author, one is convinced that this is a solid effort. The book gives an overview of new technologies and drugs. The drugs are not your normal medications. They do things such as extend memory. The technologies can give us things such as artificial hearing and artificial sight. He describes how we can use electronic sensors in the brain to control robotics to help the handicapped move limbs. In the past we might have thought that some of these drugs and technologies would be radical, or far off in the distant future, but now many of the technologies are here. The author is an editor and a reporter at the Washington Post. He has published a number of articles and books including Edge City: Life on the New Frontier and The Nine Nations of North America. The book is entertaining, and the story and writing are probably better than if written by a scientist. In his radio interview, he said that he had travelled extensively to prepare for the book, absorbing new ideas and technologies being tested by drug companies, various universities, government agencies, and in other private industry. According to the author, the products of that research are here or are coming soon. Part of his challenge was to write a book that brings the reader up to date without sounding too crazy, or too techie, or too far out. If he just presents a lot of "gee whiz" chit chat, the reader will be turned off. After all, he is a Post writer, not a hack gadget salesman. So, he has attempted to explain the social impact as he goes through the book. Also, he does not want to give the impression that it is science fiction that we have here. It i...

The Lamb-s Supper- The Mass as Heaven on Earth

5 stars (Reaches into your soul) - I was introduced to Scott Hahn when a dear friend gave me this book to read. Mr. Hahn is the first writer able to explain Catholic beliefs and doctrine in understandable layman's terms. For the first time, I truly understood teachings about the Mass and scripture, that I just doubted and had trouble believing. For once I am no longer scared of reading the Book of Revelations. Sinc then I have read many of Mr. Hahn's titles. I suggest to anyone who is struggling with understanding the Catholic Church, that you pick up any of Hahn's books and take the time to read, meditate, and be transformed. 5 stars (Gripping.) - From beginning to end this book is just fascinating. Finally, a text about the Book of Revelations that is NOT filled up with crazy "End Times" theories! This book will not only make you appreciate the Book of the Apocalypse more, but you will find this book making you appreciate the Mass in a whole new and important way. 5 stars (Judgment Day) - Someone pointed out to me that the those in the early church realized the crucial, "eschatological dimension" of the mass because of the martyrdom which was so immanent for many of them. When they heard "Kyrie eleison" (Lord have mercy) they realized that they were at that moment before the Judgment Throne of Christ on the Day of Judgment itself! We in the 21st century need books like this to make the connection between Christ's Ultimate Sacrifice and Our Ultimate Destiny. Dr. Scott Hahn masterfully connects the Book of the Apocalypse and the Divine Liturgy showing in what manner they are two manifestations of the same reality of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and his message of salvation and how they help interpret each other. This is all shown to be in accordance with the way the fathers and teachers of the Catholic Church have always viewed the Mass. I would recommend this book for non-Catholics who are curious as to why the Catholic church does not mak...

Mother Angelica - The Remarkable Story of a Nun- Her Nerve- and a Network of Miracles

5 stars (The Return of Orthodox Catholicism) - This is an exciting, well written book, something that I was not expecting at all. I began watching and contributing to EWTN during a difficult period of my life and Mother Angelica's network is a blessing to all, but especially those who are going through hard times. This book is a terrific read about how it all came about and it spends a lot of time on her battles with certain members of the American Church hierarchy - many of whom were exposed in the 2002 sex scandals for their less-than-Catholic actions and unconscionable lack of leadership. Mother Angelica is the primary figure in the ongoing renaissance of orthodox Catholicism among the laity and, equally important, in the seminaries. Mother Angelica and EWTN are providing wonderful tools for taking back our Church from what Raymond Arroyo (charitably) calls the "progressives" in the USCCB and their bureaucracies. What a wonderful book! It makes me ready to join the fight! 5 stars (BUY THIS BOOK) - This is one of the most exciting, well written biographies to come out in a very long time. Its about an underprivileged woman who became a cloistered nun and changed the world. Mother Angelica is a woman who somehow balanced real orthodoxy with brilliant management vision and skill without what seems any worldly qualifications whatsoever. Moreover, here's is a story of overcoming great suffering -- both physical and emotional -- and allowing God to transform her life without ever looking back or counting the cost. (It's worth noting too this is no saccharine sweet nun's story, to be sure!) This wonderful biography really shows us she is "The Patron Saint of CEOs" -- and patron of anyone else who by God's grace, must overcome a legion of what seem like insurmountable problems. Mother Angelica's life turns our natural aversion to personal suffering on its head and makes clear that miracles really do happen. --Enjoy. M. Hart Volant, PA 4 stars (A Dangerous Book) - ...

The Holy Longing- The Search for A Christian Spirituality

5 stars (The Holy Longing) - I am ready to listen to the audio book for a second time. I could easily relate to the author as he delved into the struggles of spirituality in one's faith life. I am going to have to listen to the Shattered Latern! 4 stars (Do religion and the business world "mix"?) - There is a clear difference between the type of spirituality the Christian "right" panders to (re: George W.) and the kind of spirituality that true Christians look to reach/gain on a daily basis. Rolheiser's book does not preach or make one feel like they are listening to a moron like the 700 Club's Pat Robertson. Rather, he is grounded in his principles - a modern day version of Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" in its sincere messages. 5 stars (A Comprehensive Understanding of Christianity) - This is a great book for any one who is struggling spiritually or wants to deepen and enrich their faith. Written in a very engaging style this is a great book for understanding what Christianity is and how to live a Christian life. Rolheiser's biggest contribution, I believe, is his emphasis on the need to balance personal prayer with community (the church), social action and a mellowness of heart (doing these things for the right reasons). His chapter on sexuality may seem the least grounded, but I think it's one of his most important, because too often Christianity has associated sexuality with the secular and bad, rather than affirming its role in the Christian life. I really believe there is something for everyone within the covers of this book. ...

The Da Vinci Code

5 stars (IT'S ONLY A BOOK!) - It's hard to explain why there's been such a fuss over this novel. Sure, it digs the Christian religion's grave just a bit more, but c'mon, it's only a novel. It's fiction. That MEEEEAANS....it's FALSE! It's not true, it's fake! If you buy a work of fiction looking for concrete facts, get a head check. Nobody's saying there's absolutely nothing true in this book, but it's not a history book, it's a suspense novel. However. I loved this book, because it makes history (false or not) very VERY interesting. I seriously couldn't put my iPod down, and that's what's so great about this novel (NOVEL!), it's about history and the church, but it's actually interesting. With the anti-book revolution today, people need to be praising Dan Brown for writing a thick book that everyone has read. Bravo. I'm done with my rant/ramble. I hope this helped. Praise da Vinci! 2 stars (Long on Entertainment, Short on Substance) - This mystery/thriller entertained me thoroughly but I must say not much of the story has stayed with me. I remember this work as a classic page turner so if you like that sort of reading experience, you should pick this up. Much has been written about the controversy surrounding the way Jesus Christ's adult life is portrayed. While this was somewhat bothersome, many media presentations have explained what aspects of this portrayal are reliable and which are not (which is most!). Neither the characters nor the writing is that memorable though. Many compare this book to the Chinese Food experience: it tastes great, really enjoyable, but not too much later, you're hungry again! 4 stars ( The Da Vinci Code ) - I thought this book was spectacular, Dan Brown really did it this time. Robert Langdon was great in the book Angels & Demons, but was even more of a symboligist hero in the second book. The Da Vinci Code is definetly full of suspense, action and mystery. I would highly recommend this book and cn hardly wait for his next bo...

Never Eat Alone

3 stars (A great read for everybody, and good advice for extroverts) - This was a very enjoyable read. The manner in which the author tells his story is very engaging and imparts some useful techniques to the reader. The type-A's out there may be able to use many of the techniques the author talks about. The rest of us, however, will be left wondering if all these things could have possible happened to one person. Truth be told I haven't read the last fifty pages. My dog decided he wanted to taste the author's work, and frankly, not being an extrovert, I did not feel compelled to pick up another copy for the last few chapters. 5 stars (Great book about breaking through the glass floor) - " Never Eat Alone " gives some excellent advice regarding developing relationships. Ferrazzi starts off by stating you really need to begin by finding your own passion and mission. Additionally, to build strong relationships you need to ask, "What can I offer?" rather than "What can I get?" Ferrazzi has an excellent writing style that is easy to understand and read. He gives some great suggestions regarding how to "ping" casual contacts and keeping in touch with people. Ferrazzi is a "follow up" maniac as he states you should continually follow up with people even if you don't hear back from them. I guess that depends on your viewpoint. There isn't much to like about this book. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to be able to develop their relationships. 5 out of 5 stars. 5 stars (Simply worth it) - I do not buy many books. I only buy the ones that I am interested in keeping. If I only want to read a book, I simply get it in the library. After reading a few reviews of " Never Eat Alone " I went to my local bookstore to have a closer look at it. Although I definitely liked the look of the book, my first reaction was "No, too expensive". And it is expensive! But then I sat down to read some passages. The more I read, the more interested I was becoming... ...

Fearless Golf - Conquering the Mental Game

5 stars (Great book on mental game of golf ) - The mental game of book of golf is worth checking out. 5 stars (Fearless Indeed) - This book teaches you to block out all distractions. It details how to focus on the golf course and your target. You hear from many of the pro golfers from today and in the past, explaining their thought process. If you take this book seriously, it will definitely improve your mental approach to the game. 4 stars (Forget about what others think. ) - Dr. Valeante's focus on fear and mastery is unique among the mental game gurus. I've always been intrigued by how the fear of a three foot putt can paralyze a perfectly healthy man. (I've been there.) As Dr. Valiante points out, a lot of it has to do with ego. When you're preoccupied with what other people think, you can't perform up to your potential. But it's hard to escape ego-oriented thinking. The achievement orientation that's so pervasive in our society feeds into it. For better or worse, we're taught to judge people, and we subconsciously know that we're being judged. But this book will help you reframe your thinking and minimize the effects of ego on your golf game. It will help you forget about the bad shots, and focus on the positive process of improvement. There are so many books on the mental side of golf, it's getting to the point of oversaturation. They all offer good insight and helpful information, but some are more applicable than others. This one falls right about in the middle. Dr. Valiante offers plenty of antidotes from tour players to illustrate his ideas, and he makes a very important point... that every round of golf should be approached as a learning experience. ...

Ashley Book of Knots

4 stars (excellent book) - as reference books go, this is one of the best for knots. any knot imaginable is here and a clear concise way to tie it. great book for any purpose. 4 stars (Knots for beginners?) - I found this book to be both educational and entertaining. As a beginning I found the diagrams hard to follow and sometimes lacking. As a novice in knots tying and having the responsibilty of teaching young adults, this book was great for the history and use of knots but lacking in the illustrations needed for me to learn how to tie the knots. 5 stars (Should be a staple in every reference library) - Go to your nearest hardware store, and look at all the fasteners. There are U-bolts, swages, eye-hooks, and on, too many to count. Well, not too long ago, the metal in a bolt would have been a prohibitive cost. Instead, the jobs of all those fasteners were filled by knots. There is a branch of mathematics called "knot theory". It deals with one-dimensional fibers crossing in 3-space, and no other dimensionality has quite the same properties. A strand, wrapped around another and holding it, is a remarkable thing. Daily jobs in older eras touch abstract math in this book. It's a remarkable encyclopedia of practical, beautiful, and profound ways of pulling things together. Ashley shows bows, buttons, nooses, braids, knots, bights, and seemingly endless other ways to make simple strings into tools, toys, and decorations. You will come away from this book with respect. All those different people - fishermen, sailors, weavers, surgeons, and shipping clerks - all of them had their own needs and only strings to meet those needs with. They did their jobs, and did them well, using the techniques remembered in this book. What's more, mathematicians use this book as a fundamental reference. Just about any twist in space was named here, so Ashley has become the catalog. When a mathematician refers to "Ashley #128", the structure has been specified completely. This is his...

Tour Tempo- Golf-s Last Secret Finally Revealed

1 stars (What a Crock) - Absolutely the worst. 2/3 of the "MINI SIZE BOOK" is devoted to the subject that no one teaches TEMPO. No kidding. The other third is back to basics with the triangle take away of hands arms and shoulder-- TEMPO? and then a CD that makes you swing as if you were on speed with beep, beep, beep, sounds. What a waste of money. 5 stars (Tour Tempo helped my game) - It is well researched and easy to grasp the concept. I downloaded the CD (comes with the book) to my iPod and took it to the range, and listened in the car on the way. The tempo feels fast on the backswing, but I believe that is the key. Less time spent on the backswing forces me to take the club back on plane with less extraneous hip/knee/elbow/wrist movement. e.g. Less to go wrong. I am a 16 handicap. I normally hit my 7 iron about 155 yards, but today I hit my 7 iron 175 yards, over the back of the green. It took me a few holes to dial in my yardages, but by the end of the round I had it going and was 1 over for the final 6 holes. Are you ready to strike the ball more consistently and get yardages like what we see from the PGA pros?? Then buy Tour Tempo, it is the real deal. 5 stars (This is a univeral truth) - The "tempo" is real. Hundreds of touring pros have been measured, "timed", and they are all one of three to four swing tempos...we're talking parts of seconds here. Almost all amateurs swing too slow...learn the "tour tempo" that fits you and you will hit the ball longer and straighter and more constently....PERIOD. ...

Zen Golf- Mastering the Mental Game

4 stars (It's All About Clarity, Confidence and Tempo) - A very quick read with lots of great tips. Especially good to clear the mind of unproductive thinking on the course and to play with clarity, confidence and purpose. The idea of Center of Gravity can save strokes right away. You'll understand the book even better when go to the range and experience how a good shot feels and then start hitting them one after another, and another... 5 stars (Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game) - Joseph Parent truly succeeds in integrating what he has learned from his Zen teachers and teachings with one's round of golf. His book is a must for all golfers, beginners and experts alike, duffers and long hitters. Points that Parent makes including breathing, putting beyond the cup, and not hitting "anyways shots" will truly improve one's round of golf. It will also impact a reader's attitude toward hitting the ball... from approach to follow-through, from driving to putting. Zen Golf is a great book and the unabridged book on CD is a must for travelers. The book has my highest recommendation. 4 stars (Just what I needed) - I recommend this book for the player that has plateaued and is frustrated on the course more than they are elated. I am having more fun on the course (and playing better) with the concepts learned in Zen Golf. When you complete the book, you may say to yourself- nice light read. It is only until you notice your changed behavior on the course that you have a new appreciation for the game and your ability. ...

Dave Pelz-s Putting Bible

5 stars (Information overload) - How much to you think you know about putting? Read greens, roll the ball at the hole, etc.. Guess what? You probably don't know the half of it. Pelz is a scientist. While his book is written to be easy to read, he does not hold back. All his data and ideas are here. He discusses everything from the miriad variety of putting strokes, to the 15 facets of the putting game he has derived. To be clear, this book is pretty heavy reading. However, his focus is not on convincing the reader of this "super technique", nor does he fill pages up with tips. He goes through and presents his data, makes conclusions regarding it, and recommends certain methods. While he doesn't force any one method on the reader, he goes to great lengths to convince you. Maybe you like your door-hinge putting arc. Fine. But why is that not as good as a pendulum-type motion (which he recommends)? He explains, not from conjecture or "years of teaching experience", but with simple scientific data and common sense. Unless you have read his other books, you most likely haven't encountered a book of golf instruction like this. It may not settle well with many readers, but if you give it a chance it will help you out. Keep in mind too that the goal he sets is not to give your stroke a quick fix with a tip. He is out to give you a stroke you will be able to use anytime, anywhere, from the time you master it until you hang your putter up for the last time. That means that there is no quick route: you need to practice. He is blunt enough to even come out and say that to groove a putting stroke requires around 20,000 repetitions. A hard truth to face, but I'd rather work towards that and develop a good permanent stroke rather than creating a patchwork stroke that breaks down every week. 5 stars (the best book you can buy to improve your putting) - an easy to read book. it explains to the core the "art" of putting. Mr. Pelz is a solid golf instructor / analyst. If you are ...

5 stars (It Works) - This is one good book. I missed a hole in one by inches on a Par 3 180 yd. When you apply the principles of this book, you can definetly aim at the Pin with good results. My wedges have improved 200% and it definetly lowered my score by 3-5 strokes. 4 stars (Pelz short game bible) - Great book.
