AlohaBob PC Relocator Ultra Control 2005

5 stars (PC Relocator Works) - Although it did not work as quickly or effortlessly as I imagined, it is much faster and easier than any other method I've used. The included 2m transfer cable was not long enough for my installed set-up, but it worked fine with a USB extension cable. The better you prepare the old PC and the new PC, the better it works. I transferred from Win98SE to XPPro with very few issues after the move (some minor OS incompatibilities, easily resolved in XPPro). Do read everything before starting. I recommend this product without reservations to everyone. 5 stars (Great product!) - Very easy to use. Just followed the instructions and all of my data was relocated to my new computer. 1 stars (Program nightmare and customer service gulag) - I'm not a novice user and read the instructions carefully before proceeding to move to a new computer with Windows XP Pro and Office 03. I did not try to migrate programs, but only files. What a mess! The program must have moved registry settings (who asked it to?) and the new computer was so screwed up I thought I was going to have to reformat. Meanwhile, customer service was virtually non-existent. When things get screwed up, one needs help right away...not in 48 hours or more! Then I filed for a refund and they've been dragging their heels (and ignoring last few emails) on that front although I qualified and presented all pertinent paperwork. It's been nearly two months! Although I was willing to try and let them resolve issues as their sales hype had assured me, that promise proved to be more fiction and less reality. Absolutely unsatisfactory! RUN...RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THIS PROGRAM! I haven't posted reviews in the past, but this experience was so bad that I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of discontented buyers. And wish I had taken those negative reviews to heart before I purchased this particular program! ...

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004

5 stars (I can't believe I haven't tried this before) - I've been using computers for 25 years, so I'm a bit jaded and not easily wowed. However, using Virtual PC 2004 has wowed me. I've stayed away from this kind of software in the past because I worried that it would run very slowly. I was wrong. I have now created two virtual machines, one Windows XP Pro and one Linux distro (PCLinuxOS) and I couldn't be happier. Not only can I run other operating systems without rebooting, but they run nearly as fast as normal. Even better, I can close them into a kind of hibernate mode so that the next time I start them up they are right where I was before. I have also set up the undo disk feature. With that, if I screw something up I can just decide to not save any changes to the virtual machine. So, if I get a virus it doesn't do any damage. If a software install trashes the system it doesn't do any real damage. Finally, I can access my host PC from the virtual PC to exchange files just as I would on a normal network. I highly recommend this software. Get the 45-day trial version first, and then I'll bet you buy a copy just like I did. 5 stars (I am loving it!) - Yesterday evening I downloaded the virtual pc 45 day trial from microsoft to try out on my tablet pc. Within an hour, using only my net connection (no floppy, no cdrom) I had a running Debian Linux system. This really rocks! I have already placed an order for the licensed package here on Amazon. 4 stars (Using Minix on Virtual PC for Windows free demo version) - My interest in Virtual PC is for experimenting with the Minix operating system without repartitioning the hard disk. Minix is meant for educational use, and university lab PCs are not always available for dedicated use. I downloaded the free VPC for Windows demo. I found VPC easy to install on a Windows 2000 system. However, the link to Microsoft support on the startup page did not work for me. Installing Minix on a VPC virtual disk was anot...

Micromat PodLock Mac

3 stars (Review for the Alaska Apple Users Group) - Utility maker, Micromat, has moved from the Mac into the bigger world of Apple hardware with their iPod utility, PodLock. While it's not alone in the arena, PodLock performs a few functions that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. While PodLock lets you peruse the entire contents of your iPod (including songs, pictures, and recordings), it's main purpose is to provide users with the ability to backup, optimize, and secure data stored on your iPod. The interface resembles a 3G iPod. The pseudo-iPod's screen shows the technical details of any connected iPod while all the program's functions are immediately available through one-touch buttons buttons. While this interface metaphor is simple and familiar, it isn't standard, so some elements don't look very good, particularly drawers. Those drawers are used to display three categories of iPod content - music, pictures, and audio recordings. Each drawer displays a list of the associated files. Details can be displayed on any file and, best of all, music can be played and pictures can be viewed directly off the iPod! That means you can sample music from someone else's iPod. The real power feature of the program, however, is the ability to create an invisible partition on your iPod for storing data if you have at least 500MB free. After determining the size of the partition you can lock access with a password and even use Apple's FileVault encryption to further secure the contents. This provides a comforting alternative to the simpler iPod disk mode option offered in iTunes. But wait, that's not all! PodLock has one more feature to add to your piece of mind. With a single click you can save a backup of all the data on your iPod. That means that after the loss or accidental reformatting of your iPod, an equally simple restore function will bring all of the contents back. As an added bonus, you can use PodLock to analyze and then defrag your iPod's drive, improving...

Symantec pcAnywhere 11 5 Host - Remote

5 stars (pcanywhere 11.5 host and remote) - Product worked great. The wizard allows for easy setup for a new connection. Ive used several previous versions of pcanywhere and as far as ease of use the previous versions are not in the same league as the current one. 5 stars (PcA still tops in file transfer) - [...] Terminal Services does not include a simple to configure (or use for that matter) file transfer function. PcAnywhere is still tops in file transfer functionality. The Command Queue in versions 11.0 and above is simply sweet. Load up file transfer and transfer over as many files as you like in the order you choose. You don't have to wait for the last file(s) to transfer before you move on to other files. You just keep selecting files to transfer and PcA puts them into a queue list to be sent in the order you selected them. You can rearrange this list as well, as it's processing. Sure, there are a ton of PcAnywhere alternatives, but without FTP/HTTP or VPN connections to transfer files (which may also require more firewall fiddling), PcAnywhere gives you the capability and does so very well. If you don't need to transfer data/files, then by all means, use RDC (Remote Desktop Control) or Terminal Services or VNC or....well, you get the picture. And those are only the tip of the remote control software iceberg....but PcA is still one of the best all inclusive tools around. 1 stars (Look into "Remote Desktop") - There is no longer any need for this product. Remote Desktop, also known as "Terminal Services", built into Windows XP Professional, is far faster and works better than pcAnywhere ever did. ...

Norton Ghost 9 0 - Disk Imaging Solution

2 stars (If you truely value your data, consider another more dependable product.) - I have been performing system backups with Ghost 9.0 for over a year now, with no problems. Recently, my system disk crashed twice in a matter of a month. The first time I spent four days getting everything to work again using Ghost restore. Barely got it. The second time I was not so fortunate. I am seeking another means of data backup. This version is half of what the previous versions were. PROS: Nice, easy interface. Backup data without rebooting or shutting down. CONS: Resource intensive! The snapshot feature that allows you to backup while you "work" is a resource hog, whether you are doing backups or not. It has proven unreliable for me, overall, mainly due to poor restoration features. Backs up great! But if you want to restore... uh, sorry! And of course, Norton's support is sub-par. Hope you can surf support websites well and speak Indian. Don't buy it. Give your money to another company that put some real thought into their product, and supports it. Or use an earlier version. 1 stars (Norton Ghost a Bust) - I have a shared drive on a small network running XP. Ghost is an old DOS program which doesn't like shared drives, doesn't like networks and doesn't like XP. Strongly recommend purchasing something else for this application. P.H.Woods 1 stars (Absolutely worthless) - I've been happy with Norton Internet Security for years. When the hard drive in my two year old Dell Dimenstion started making occasional "retry" noises, I decided it was time to transfer everything to a new drive. I spent an entire day trying to get Norton Ghost 9 to work. The disk copy would complete sucessfully, but the new drive would not boot. Then I started reading these reviews and found that I was not alone. Based on the recommendations in these reviews, I downloaded the 15 day trial version of True Image 8.0 from Acronis. It worked perfectly. Norton should be ashamed of taking...

VCOM Partition Commander 9 0

3 stars (Some trouble with installation) - I purchased Partition Commander 9 specifically so I could add (and dual-boot) Linspire to my PC which already had Windows XP. The initial installation of the basic program was accomplished flawlessly with the setup wizard. The problem arose when I tried to use the automatic "add another OS" feature. The partitioning would seemingly progress fine for several minutes, but then I would get a message that the program encountered "an error," and it would stop. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program without difficulty, but with the same result (except the error message popped up at different times) for a total of four attempts at "add another OS." Incidentally, I chose to not make the boot disks, as this is a new computer with nothing important on it yet, so I could more easily restore it than rebuild it. So, I then decided to create the new partition manually. I am closer to "novice" than "experienced," and I did have a few false starts. However, it did come with a well-written printed manual, and I did not have too much difficulty figuring out what to do. Everything then worked out fine, and thus far I have had no problems running either operating system. 5 stars (Flawless for me) - Last time I used Partition Commander was version 6. Yes, I had an issue where I lost a partition, but I became well aware of the program after that. Bought Version 9 (even after reading the reviews) because I bought a Dell laptop and for some reason Dell thinks I like a 80 GB drive all in one partition. Thinking I had nothing to lose since the laptop is so new, I bought Partition Commander 9 and installed it. I too chose NOT to use the 2 floppies, and install continued fine for me. I chose NOT to install or use System Commander because I didn't want to have that as a boot loader. For the single purpose of breaking my one drive into 3, I rebooted the laptop and went to work in the familiar interface that I was used to in Version 6. Afte...

Norton Systemworks 3 0 Mac AntiVirus- Utilities- Backup- Spring Cleaning

1 stars (Don't purchase this if you have 10.4) - the utilities portion of this software package will not work on 10.4 and Norton said it won't be updating it. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Go with one of the many other programs that can actually do the work. Norton has hit the skids! 1 stars (Shame on Norton) - Norton should have taken this product off the market. They had decided not to continue development for OS X 10.4 Tiger but didn't tell the coustomers leaving many like me to find out by tragic experiencce that their once great software is now dangerous to install and and difficult to uninstall. If you are running OS X 10.4 DO NOT INSTALL this program. 2 stars (Mac User beware) - Is Norton Antivirus reliable? I think that can be answered with a yes. Well, there are not so many Mac viruses around, so that statement is not validated in my own experience. What neither Amazon nor Symantec really tell you on first glance is that Antivirus 9.0 is NOT compatible with OSX 10.4. So I ended up buying Systemworks (for a steeper price then the Windows products no less) and it did not work. Two lengthy conversations with Symantec's service center in India later I knew that I had to dish otu another $40 for the upgrade to Antivirus 10.0 - you can get reimbuirsed for your purchase but it seems to take a lifetime. The Utilities package was unable to repair one of my disks wken I needed it... who knows why. Otherwise it seems to function OK under 10.4. Overall, my recommendation is if you have OSX 10.4 or plan to upgrade soon, look for another product. ...

Norton Ghost 9 0 and Partition Magic 8 0 Bundle

5 stars (Does the job well) - The product works great, and I was able to restore my hard drive once. One caution is that you will not be able to restore your hard drive over a wireless network using Ghost. The actual copy was flawless, so thumbs up! The Partition Magic/Boot Magic suite is sort of the industry standard that has been trusted for ages, and it works very well, if you know how to use it. Partitioning your hard drive is not something to be taken lightly (if you mess up you will probably have to spend multiple hours fixing things), so it is important to have a good backup copy, which is what Norton Ghost is for. Be careful when uninstalling Boot Magic. I had to reinstall it once, and I messed up which is why I had to restore with Ghost. Follow all instructions carefully, and the product itself is solid. 1 stars (Symantec Destroyed Powerquest) - I remember Powerquest Partition Magic 2.0, back in the days it was released as an OS/2 *and* MS-DOS utility you could boot and use from a set of two diskettes. I got hands-on experience with Partition Magic up to version 7. Slowly they started dropping features, like HPFS file system support, for no apparent reason. Soon after version 8 was released, the corporation dubbed Symantec -which I like to refer to as "Engulf and Devour"- bought powerquest and while I no longer used it, soon I started hearing the complaints about the new "activation scheme" in version 8.x, which insisted on "phoning home" before allowing you to use it. And now, users are supposed to like this artificial, crippled bundle as other reviewers have said below. PQMagic and Powerquest Drive Image have been always superior to Symantec's Ghost products. The era of small powerquest utilities that would fit on a diskette is gone. It's sad to see such a great company and their products destroyed by Symantec's corporate greed. Welcome to the Symantec partition resizing utility monopoly!. Symantec got rid of their main competitor and destr...
