Oracle 10g Data Warehousing

4 stars (Very good overall coverage) - This book is very useful if you want to get overall coverage of data warehousing related features in Oracle 10g. The book does not covers any topic in details but does covers all areas (SQL, Utilities, OWB, Discoverer, ODM) related to the DW/BI space. 5 stars (Well I am Happy) - Well I found this book extremely useful. Okay so you could wade thru the doc, but this book has everthing in one place with some easy to follow examples. It also encouraged me to take a look at using EM rather than typing everything in on the command line. 3 stars (Good overview, but frustated by errors and lack of source) - I'm new to both Oracle and Data Warehousing and I haven't found many Data Warehousing texts specific to Oracle. I was hoping this would not only be a source for an architecture and design overview, but I also hoped to setup and work through the examples I saw in text as I perused it in the book store. I mean, no one would publish a modern computer book without providing downloadable source, would they? Maybe I missed something, but there is no CD, no reference in the text, and I checked the publishers web site. Found nothing! Especially for a topic like Data Warehousing, where learning to manage large amounts of data is the point of the whole subject, I found it amazing that no sample data is provided. Along this same line, the Appendix that shows the schema setup for the example database has errors in the script code, plus the steps are out of order. Apparently the authors expect you to use the Enterprise Manager to setup your database. The setup scripts appear to be an afterthought, and do not appear to be edited. If the authors had provided downloadable scripts and data, perhaps they would have been forced to work through this setup themselves and would have avoid this problem. I'm building sample data, and reading through the text, but for $60.00 I expected more. ...

MicrosoftÂ# Exchange Server 2003 Deployment and Migration

3 stars (Good reference but not a step-by-step) - The author is obviously well versed in the migration process and the tools and structures that live under the surface. However, the level of detail presented is simply too deep to be useful as a step-by-step guide, which is what I was hoping for. This book will serve as a book shelf reference to backup more detailed walkthroughs I have found on Microsoft's websites. 3 stars (Helpful, but a work in progress) - It seems this book was rushed to press with little proof reading of its content. While there is plenty of helpful info, there are also plenty of items that are not technically correct. Many of these can be pitfalls if they are not caught early enough in the process. For example, the book claims that to execute Forestprep one needs to be a domain admin. This is not correct. To execute Domainprep one needs to be a domain admin. To execute Forestprep one needs to be a schema admin, enterprise admin, and local admin on the machine where forestprep is run. This isn't a big issue in single domain implementations, but in a typical parent/child enviro this can be a pitfall. Overall, this is a great compilation of information that is otherwise difficult to find. I certainly found the book to be extremely useful when used alongside other documentation such as the MS deployment and planning guides. However, I believe the book could use another round of editing and a release as a second edition. 5 stars (Clearest instructions for 5.5 to 2003 Exchange migration!) - It seems like I read every white paper and book out there about migration from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. All left me wanting more information. Until I read Kieran's book that is. Our government Department will be upgrading shortly and we now have the info we need to do the job. Thanks to Kieran for a great job in putting together his excellent book. ...

Network programming in NET- C- - Visual Basic NET

5 stars (Start programming right away with Networking programming in .Net) - The book is very comprehensive and filled with many examples that you can copy within your code and will start working right away. All the examples in the book are explained in detailed and networking concepts are also explained. 4 stars (Great book for Network Programming..) - I'm a newbie to all the Network stuff. It was very helpful having both VB.NET & C#.. I do program for both... I would of given 5 stars but I would like to have the code..No need to type.. 4 stars (Wide Coverage WITHOUT Source Code) - Overall, covers many areas, lacks detailed socket theory, wastes space and no source code. The book covers a lot of stuff that I hadn't anticipated, which I thought was great. The book goes from Streaming, sockets, numerous internet related protocols, multicasting, telephony and MSMQ. The book really lacks detailed explanation on Sockets however there are plenty of code examples to learn from. The samples could use more detailed explanation. They are concise and the few I took the time to type in worked fine. There is no mention of source code being available. I contacted the publisher, Elsevier - Digital Press, and after a 3 day delay said 'the source code is on the inside cover'. No sure what that means I guess I will have to wait another 3 days to find out. One other dislike was the fact that every code snippet is duplicated in each language. The book is intended for non beginners so there should be no need to waste so much space. The second language should be available in a download. I gave the 4 only because of the wide coverage and great theory in these other areas. The book will get you writing apps that can talk to each other over IP. ...
