The Gift of Fear

5 stars (Routinely Recomend) - I have recommended this book many times. Knowledge is power and comfort. There is no hysteria created by reading this book as some reviewer who have not even read the book purport. Of course I already "knew" about many of Mr. De Becker's principles, as we all should. Its just important to be reminded or should I say "hit up side the head" with them. His examples do just that. I read the book 2 years ago when my husband hired Mr. De Becker's firm to work on a safe room for a client and YES... I have retained all the information. Imagine that. I just recommended the book to my son's girlfriend who is off to college and will keep recommending it. 4 stars (Part of the Story, But With Some Flaws) - This book does a very good job of helping people recognize behaviors and actions that may lead to trouble. Unfortunately, this book has some flaws and certainly could have been better. Mr. De Becker is clearly an expert at teaching about manipulation, grooming, and other patterns of behavior that often precede violence. He does a great service in explaining techniques used by antisocials and ways to counteract them by following our instincts. On the down side, the book contains a lot of anti-gun propaganda. The author tends to make unsubstantiated claims about how having a gun makes one less safe. He uses a couple of examples while ignoring the hundreds of cases annually where individuals with weapons have saved their own lives or those of others. Additionally, he tends to do a lot of self promotion for his company and name dropping of the ultra leftist elites of Hollywood. Although it may impress some readers that he has connections with Rosie O'Donnell and Barbara Streisand, it certainly does nothing to enhance his credibility. On the contrary, it makes him appear to be a liberal with an agenda. In this case, that is making people less self reliant for their own protection while promoting his company. How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci- Seven Steps to Genius Every Day

2 stars (Kind of Pointless...) - The book was very well written and i must say that i really did enjoy the introduction chapters which was filled with bits of Leonardo's life, work, and other mentions of factual knowledge that was quite interesting. However, once the core of the book started to unfold it became very dry reading and the "self-help"'ish way the book is written becomes monotonous and i began to feel that Gelb himself is just too over enthused about Leonardo Da Vinci. I agree that he is a very noteworthy person to idolize and model your own life around to some extent but in some of the sections dealing with the senses and "what to do's" it seemed like he was stretching a bit and making Leonardo too godlike for his own right. Also, another qualm i had with the book was when he listed his own group of people he felt were noteworthy and i feel that it was tactless to do so because your ranking people from different genres, walks of lfe, skills and talents, and placing them as if it were the olympics in competition and it seemed to be another way to just give more praise to Leonardo in his fascination and obsession to put Da Vinci on some sort of pedestal. Again, i feel Leonardo was a brilliant man but to write a book solely on the content of how to think like him, i feel, is pointless and has no substance because he himself is not writing the book but only a mere fan who has never met the man, has no relevance to the time period Da Vinci lived in, and, again, ISNT DA VINCI writing a book about how to think like him. Many people reading this may say "well, what about biographies, those are people who may not have known the person they are writing about". Very true, but this is not a biography. Instead this is a list of thing you can do yourself to mock the way Da Vinci decided things, thought, and lived his life. Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases- 2-Volume Set

5 stars (The book you need) - As an infectious disease fellow, I recommend that anyone who want be an ID man should have such a book. Most infectious problems and diseases have been detailed in this book, although there are far going of emerging diseases and new antibiotics. The only shortcomes of this book are lackiing comprehensive details and reveiw of antimicrobial therapy for some disease entities. 5 stars (A good clinical microbiology text) - The two volume set is indeed a comprehensive reference work, but individual chapter can be read by themselves. I use this book on almost a daily basis, the only negative against it is that such a large book by its size can only be updated at intervals of a number of years so a folder in which to put your acculated journal articles next to it, until the next edition is advised as, infectious diseases is not a static field. Since there is a CD rom available now that may well be worth checking out. In closing for anybody involved in anything from clinical microbiology to a infectious disease specialist this book is a must. 5 stars (Every Infectious Disease specialist has one!) - I'm an Infectious Diseases fellow, and everyone who rotates through this training program, obtains in some way or another, a copy of this book. It is an awesome review of every known topic in infectious diseases. The first volume consists of I. Principles II. Syndromes. Principles focuses on topics ranging from antibiotics, their mechanism of action, pharmocokinetics and methods of bacterial resistance, to epidemiology and infection control. Syndromes focuses on various clinical problems from the "common cold" to endocarditis. These are heavily researched, and supported with your standard references section for further investigation. Each disease is discussed in detail and includes clinical symptoms, epidemiology, etiology, complications, and treatment. Spell of the Highlander

5 stars (Dark magic draws you in (um, like a dark mirror that can trap you for a thousand years!)) - Karen Marie Moning weaves magic with hot highlander goodness. Ah, it's such a nice blend, too. Behind the every day goings on of the world is one where faries tinker and power can weave worlds. This power can be light or it can be dark. Cian, born gifted with power and charged as a guardian of the Sidhe, was tempted by the dark arts. Unfortunatly that kind of stuff attracts unsavory types. Hence Cian has been trapped for hundreds of years in a mirror of dark power. Grad student Jessica St. James, unfortunately, ends up opening up a package for her professor that contains this dark object. Sure, you get a hot guy, but the headache of having to deal with a dark mirror and a psycho dark mage ready to kill for it back. Of course the romance between Jessica St. James and Cian is fabulous. Karen Marie Moning has a talented pen and writes dialogue that is funny and wicked. I really enjoy her world of alpha highlanders and magic. 4 stars (Scottish Delight!) - Oh, if only this book had been longer, I didn't want it to end! But if it hadn't I would have been up even later than 3am. If your familliar with Moning's books you'll know this is a continuation in the Kelter Druid/ Faery series.And after reading the end of this book you find out that there are atleast 2 or 3 more books to come! The dialogue of this novel was so beautiful I may force my husband to read it and learn a thing or two! Cian Kelter is the oldest of our druid hotties yet. A genetic freak born in the 9th century & made laird at birth, he has all the possible magical abilities bred into the Kelter line. Naively he invited another druid into the castle one night, an evil twisted man, and to sum up events Cian ended up stuck in an enchanted mirror perched on his enemies study wall for the past 1,133 years. And he'd have probably stayed there...if the magic that enabled a previous Kelter hotty to serve hadn...

4 stars (Good Read) - I found this book enjoyable, although the time travel concept got me a bit. I also recommend Time Camera by Terence Lee which looks at the subject from a different perspective. 4 stars (Gabaldon's Imagination Makes Her Historical Tale Easily Believable) - Adventurous twenty-eight-year-old Englishwoman Claire Randall finds herself in the time right after the end of the Second World War, returned to marriage with a man she barely knows. She had wed her husband in a fit of romantic passion right at the outbreak of the war and then been separated from him for most of the next six years. She is now unhappy and does not exactly know what to do. Relations with her nominal husband are strained and she is full of regrets. In an effort to reconcile, the couple takes a last ditch vacation to the far north of Scotland, and there Claire, when walking alone one morning on the mist-covered moors, visits a standing stone legendary for its mysterious magic. All this is established right away in this novel, which then morphs into what is neither a science fiction tale, a romance story, straightforward history, nor a fantasy, yet which contains elements of all those genres. On that morning at the stone, Claire is cast backward in time to the same spot in the Highlands, in the 1740's, and there, alone and understandably bewildered, she must survive in a landscape both familiar and foreign. 5 stars (Wedding Planner/Coordinator Guide ) - I loved this book because it didn't totally focus on the aspect of becoming a wedding planner, but also the more silent topics. It provided me with perfect examples of purchase orders, service requests, billing, and the how to's of marketing my future business. One can apply the information in this book to almost any personal business with a little tweeking of words and services, of course.... Highly recommend the FabJob Guide to becoming anything your heart desires!!! 4 stars (Dynamite!) - For the size and intent, this is the best book on the market. If you are thiking of becoming a professional wedding planner, this introductory book covers all the things you will have to learn. What it doesn't cover in detail, it points you in the direction of where you can find more information, with recommended websites and book titles. What it won't do, however, is teach you all the minute and various specific details that apply to your market and jurisdiction. As with any business, you still have to do a lot of legwork before you can actually make any money. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know exactly what's involved in getting started. 5 stars (A very useful book) - I have just finished reading this wonderful book.
