Biology - Life on Earth 7th Edition

2 stars (Book for high school, not worth the money) - This book goes into explaining Hardy-Weinberg principle and doesn't even have the equation for it! Nor does it mention two important words in the same chapter - dominant and recessive. If you want to look at pictures of animals and read over-simplified explanations then buy it. If your are looking for a scholarly book, then I would suggest to look elsewhere. 3 stars (Too much "fluff") - The major problem with this book is that there is so much unnecessary paragraphs which can just be said in a couple of sentences. This book is only good for those who have major trouble grasping the concepts and are in need of a mass amount of analogies and metaphors. If you are looking for a Biology book straight to the point, this is not for you; a better book is "Inquiry into Life" by Sylvia S. Mader. Once I read "Inquiry into Life," I found that "Biology: Life on Earth" was too drawn out. It is also not as detailed as I had expected it to be. 4 stars (An excellent introduction to biology!) - (Note: This review refers to the fifth edition of this book.) The authors of Biology: Life on Earth have written a beautiful, fairly comprehensive but not overwhelming introduction to the subject of biology. Although I have a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's in botany and found the book to be straightforward and clear, it is written so well and in such an engaging and conversational style that it should also be straightforward and clear to anyone who is new to biology. The colorful photographs and detailed diagrams add to the beauty of the book. I also like the feel of the pages. Many introductory biology books nowadays are quite heavy and bulky, and there is so much information in them that it is sometimes hard to get the "big picture." But this particular book is able to get the main aspects of biology conveyed in a more compact size. ( Some biology textbooks can be upwards of 1200 or more pages long, but this book gets...

Six Sigma For Dummies

5 stars (Understanding the Power of SIx Sigma) - This book is an excellent guide for people who want to know, what is Six Sigma? The authors inform you that Six Sigma is more than a bunch of statistics in a production environment, but also a culture that can be applied to any organization. There is a section; however, that covers the statistical tools used by Six Sigma professionals. They provide important information on how to use the DMAIC model and what it can do for your organization. It covers the key points of implementing Six Sigma and how to measure processes by looking for the "vital few" variables". I highly recommend this book for anyone considering implementing Six Sigma or those who want to know more about this powerful culture. It is well written in terms that can be easily understood by all. 5 stars (Useful for Learners, Teachers & Leaders) - I work as a manager and Master Black Belt at a Fortune 100 company. This book has been very useful in my training of others. I just finished teaching a Six Sigma Black Belt course in which I referred students to this book to reinforce their learning and deepen their understanding. It has transformed the way I teach Six Sigma as well as the way my students learn it. Not only am I suggesting that BB's and BB's-in-training get this book, but I'm also recommending that leaders who have GB's and BB's on their staffs read this book. It gives enough information for leaders to understand what their Six Sigma staff are going through in the trenches. And it also provides leaders with enough education to ask meaningful questions. (Nothing is worse than an uninformed leader trying to lead Six Sigma resources!) 2 stars (Doesn't have a target audience) - If you're just curious about what six-sigma is this is a good, easy to understand, book. But it teaches you little that can be applied. I'm in a company that is begining a six sigma effort and I am assisting the black and green belts in their work. I had wanted...

Understanding Wood - A Craftsman-s Guide to Wood Technology

5 stars (a craftsman's guide to wood technology) - This book gives a great account of all the properties of wood and even shows why different woods are better for different applications. I was able to select the best wood for an application in which I was using wood for a bearing surface. This is a great book. 5 stars (New Edition combines the best of several Undergraduate txt.) - As a professional Wood Scientist, I wholeheartedly recomment this updated book for wood identification of softwoods, domestic and exotic hardwoods(colored side by side photos), basic engineering princilpes, utilization, and general wood principles. For my oral exam in graduate school, I was advised to memorize this book and neglect all others. The advice was good! 5 stars (The theory of woodworking) - I can honestly say that this book is for everyone who works with wood, from the occasional home whittler or handyman to the professional creating engineered lumber. It covers every aspect of the material, starting with the way a tree's growing environment affects the lumber product. Hoadley gives a variety of different points used in identifying the wood's species. He then discusses the effects of cutting green wood in different ways, drying it (how-to, how long, when it's done, etc), and machining it. Hoadley doesn't discuss woodworking machines per se, but gives a lot of attention to the interaction of blade and material. He shows the details of how cutting tools affect the visible surface of the wood, and the problems that can come from poor edges, blade angles, pressure, and other factors. He also discusses joining pieces of wood, gluing them, and finishing them. There is so much here that it's omissions are more noteworthy. It discusses glue joints, but says very little about specific adhesives. That's fair - there are so many, for so many purposes, that the topic deserves an encyclopedia of its own. Also, the adhesives and bonding techniques used commercially are very differ...

The Art of Expressing the Human Body

5 stars (Unexpecting) - Some people may be skeptical about Bruce Lee as a martial artist, bodybuilder, fitness enthusiast, etc. But in reality one need not be a fan to understand the brilliance to his methods. The book always emphasizes that Bruce was all about changing things, looking and trying all aspects, then deciding what stays and what is unnecessary. Like chiseling away the pieces of stone to carve a statue. After having done extensive research into bodybuilding, fitness, martial arts, Asian Medicine, Eastern Philosophy, exercise physiology, and dietetics I can honestly say that this book is very advanced. What I mean by this is that one has to do his/her own research to decide about the methods outlined. Indeed some of the research is outdated. For example the couplings of incomplete proteins and complete is slightly flawed in logic. However, you must not forget these methods were employed way before large advances were made in the way of sports nutrition and supplementation. In the training aspect any normal human would indeed be overtrained. But the body is a magnificent creation and can adapt to anything that it encounters. Shaolin Monks, Ultra Runners, Olympic Gymnasts... they all do things that would overtrain any of us normal people. But they are not overtrained. Indeed Bruce had trained long and hard to become as resilient as such. As someone who has done a little Personal Training I have to say that his development when he started lifting weights showed his ability to adapt. His body became very muscular very quickly. However, for those who think steroids were his thing... they were not. Not only did he believe in the natural way he also believed that a bulky body will decrease flexibilty and overall speed and endurance. So he actually lost muscle for the sake of being a better martial artist. At this time the only available steroids were things such as testosterone and Dianabol. Bulking agents. (Yes, some steroids build mass a...

Tao of Jeet Kune Do

5 stars ( Tao of Jeet Kune Do ) - Awesome book. Very insightful regarding the training and throught process of Bruce Lee. Highly recommeneded to all Bruce Lee fans and martial artists alike. 5 stars (Very good reference books.) - If you are looking for the most comprehensive Jeet Kun Do books, then Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kun Do" and "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method" dooks and videos are the only reference materials you need. Only books written by Bruce himself are worthy of Jeet Kun Do instruction. 5 stars (The Beauty of the Book) - This book was incredibly fun to read, and I think that it should be kept this way. You cannot learn martial arts from this book, and furthermore, the introduction of the book suggests that Bruce, himself, had qualms about releasing it because he figured that people would use it improperly. This book doesn't teach martial arts, but rather is an outline of various principles underlying them...principles that are best to be absorbed and experienced while reading, and then forgotten about. The book is packed with esoteric wisdom and compelling ideas and drawings. Enjoy! ...

Chemistry- The Central Science- Ninth Edition

1 stars (Not for beginners) - This text makes chemistry complicated! There is a constant need to flip back and forth through the book to collect information needed for problem solving, and that includes the periodic table. The table in the front of the book does not even have the charges of elements. This book was written by professors for professors and not new students to chemistry. $ 150.00 of worthless 4 stars (Easy to read, excellent problems, solutions manual valuable) - I bought the book to review General Chemistry that I took many years ago because I am taking Organic Chemistry this Fall. The book covers General Chemistry quite well. It is highly readable and develops ideas progressively. The reader is never faced with a term or concept that has not already been explained. The back references interspersed throughout will save the reader many hours of looking into the index to find a topic that was covered earlier in the book. I also purchased the solutions manual and was generally pleased. Apart from the occasional error , the manual provides solutions to EVERY problem which is an enormous help. The book does have a weakness which is relatively unimportant to most readers including this one. Chapters 24 and 25 are devoted to Coordination Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. In these chapters, it almost seems as if the text was written ( or edited ) by a person or group other than those who produced the first 23 chapters. The book no longer serves the reader and you will be forced ( without too much consternation ) to purchase a proper Organic Chemistry text. The authors might have done better to lighten the load in every undergraduate's backpack and simply delete Chapters 24 and 25. 5 stars (Simple and Straightforward) - This book gives a great overview of freshman chemistry. I bought it as a reference to use teaching high school chemistry. I love the illustrations and the way the author makes complex issues simple while providing just enough material to ram...

Bruce Lee-s Fighting Method- Vol 2- Basic Training Bruce Lee-s Fighting Method

5 stars (Fantastic often overlooked principles of training) - Bruce Lee covers the basics and foundations of training. All too often martial artists focus their energies on techniques without developing or preparing the body for such techniques. This volume covers: 1) Aerobic Conditioning - running vs jumping rope 2) Stretching 3) Core muscle strengthening almost always overlooked. Namely abdominal toning 4) Proper stance and movement 5) Footwork 6) Developing power in your strikes 7) Increasing your speed 4 stars (The Fighting Method Series Captures Bruce Lee) - Mito Uyehara was the founder and publisher of Black Belt magazine. Mito actually took privates from Bruce in his office according to staff legend. Mito also gave Bruce plenty of exposure in Black Belt, but the books in this series, Bruce Lee's Fighting Methods, are the true legacy of that relationship. Mito was very protective of Bruce's image and his admiration for him is as clear as the many photographs in these books. Of course, Bruce Lee was always changing his methods and ideas about training. To what degree he would have stood behind this material some 40-years later has been the subject of much debate. The closest thing to a modern version of this series is How to Master Bruce Lee's Fighting Style by Lee student Joe Lewis, who credits much of his success to principles he learned while working with Bruce Lee. But, "never take your eyes off the finger, or you will miss a great book for any Bruce Lee fan." 5 stars (Required reading) - IN MEMORY OF MARIO PONTILLO Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist." I have the 1st editions of all the "best" books. This book will walk you through the physical aspect of his methods. I recommend you get all the volumes from this series. You will need to start from the beginning; and you do that by emptying your cup so Bruce may fill it. My favorite quote: "Knowing is not enough, you must apply; willing is not enough, you mu...

Chemistry - The Central Science 10th Edition

4 stars (Chemistry: The Central Science (10th edition)) - I am pleased with my purchase of this product. It seemed to be previously owned, which I was unaware of (it was not made clear) when I first ordered it. However I really like the textbook and it even has some bonuses I was not expecting (ie: answers to problems and side comments that ease in the understanding of the text). So the sale could have been made more clear, but I am definitely happy with my purchase. ...
