Literacy for the 21st Century - A Balanced Approach 4th Edition

5 stars (The best reading methods textbook I've found) - I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (A must have!!) - I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it! 5 stars (Excellent resource for teachers) - This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children. ...

Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step for Government and Nonprofit Agencies

5 stars (A book for the 21st century) - Niven is one of the best authors on BSC. If this administration and communications tool has been hailed as one the best new concepts in the business world, in nonprofit and government administration it can have even more impact. It is a great general introduction, but even seasoned experts will find enlightenment and a great very updated bibliography. Works very well as a textbook for nonprofit management with HBS cases. 5 stars (Clear, informative and highly implementable advice) - Although the Balanced Scorecard has taken over performance mangagement thinking in business, its linkages and adaptability to public and non-profit organizations has remained extremely challenging. I currently am resposible for leading planning and strategy development for a large social services provider in Canada. Being a strong proponent of Balanced Scorecard theory, I anxiously waited two months for Paul Niven's latest book to hit the shelves in hope that I could adapt the balanced scorecard approach to evaluate our organization's strategy. Long story short >> Balanced Scorecard for Government and Nonprofit Agencies was an incredible investment, and we are now on the way to better measuring and reporting on our organization's progress with the help of this book's advice, tips and proecess design steps. Paul Niven's writing style provides a clear and informative description of the balanced scorecard approach to performance planning and measurement - and presents easy-to-follow steps for designing and implementing performance systems to monitor and evaluate the impact of nonprofit and public sector programs. I highly recommend this easy-to-read book to anyone interested in understanding how the world's leading approach to performance measurement and management can be successfully incorporated into your organization. 4 stars (Good & Practical Book on Balanced Scorecard) - I've read most of the literature on the Balanced Scorecard and the previo...

Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step- Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results

5 stars (Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step: Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results) - Good book for those who are new to Balanced Scorecard. The writer wrote it in a thorough and easy to read way. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn this management tool and to implement it in their organization. 1 stars (Requires Acrobat Big Brother? digital sign-in) - Suggest you test your digital capability to download eBooks and open them by using Acrobat's "FileDigital EditionsAuthorize Devices" before buying as Acrobat now requires a drm activation on each computer by computer and this apparently has to be transferred one to the other, and the worst part is that they apparently have major problems with their drm activation server such that I have been unable to get my "instant" pdf book for two days now. There many entries in the Adobe forum on this issue. The book involved is the Balanced Scorecard Step-by-step. Adobe has scored a zero on this one for me. The experience is enough to turn one off all future eBooks. 5 stars (Excelente libro.

Using the Balanced Scorecard as a Strategic Management System HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition

1 stars (very bad service in support for download of documents) - I dont recommend this PDF Documen its very expensive, ITs better the phisical book, I want this document in the meantime my phisical book is arriving, I got the book two days after, and I couldnt read the ebook the service I received throug AMAZON was very bad, they tell they can send the documento to your email but that is not true, they dont give me my money back. 3 stars (The use of the Balanced Scorecard in strategic planning) - This 1996 Harvard Business Review article, by Harvard Business School professor Robert Kaplan and David Norton, president of Nolan, Norton & Co., is an extension to their articles 'The Balanced Scorecard: Measures that Drive Performance' (1992) and 'Putting the Balanced Scorecard to Work' (1993). The balanced scorecard made it possible for managers to express and measure operational performance. This article discusses the integration of the four balanced scorecard perspectives (financial, customer, internal-business-process, and learning-and-growth) into strategic planning. In order to do this the authors introduce four (new) processes. The first process is called 'translating the vision' and helps managers to build a consensus around the organization's vision and strategy. The second process - communicating and linking - allows managers to communicate their strategy throughout the organization and link it to departmental and individual objectives. The third process - business planning - enables companies to integrate their business and financial plans. The fourth and final process - feedback and learning - gives companies that capacity for strategic learning (single-loop and Chris Argyris' double-loop learning). Each of these processes are discussed using various companies as examples. The aim of the authors is to enable managers to use the balanced scorecard as a framework for managing the strategy and vision, thereby linking long-term strategic objectives with short-ter...

Putting the Balanced Scorecard to Work HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition

3 stars (The introduction of the balanced scorecard in companies) - This 1993 Harvard Business Review article, by Harvard Business School professor Robert Kaplan and David Norton, president of Nolan, Norton & Co., builds on their 1992 article 'The Balanced Scorecard: Measures that Drive Performance'. In that article, the authors made it possible for managers to express and measure operational performance. Acccording to the authors, the balanced scorecard is not a template that can be applied to businesses in general or even industrywide. Therefore, the authors introduce the use of the balanced scorecard within three companies in three different industries - Rockwater (subsea engineering and contruction company), Apple Computers (computers), and Advanced Micro Devices (semiconductors). The authors provide a step-by-step guide to building a balanced scorecard and explain very shortly the link between the balanced scorecard and external reporting. The article concludes with an interview with Larry Brady, executive vice president of FMC Corporation (diversified company in the US), who explains how their organization has implemented the balanced scorecard. I was disappointed by this article. The weakness in this article is that it is useless without reading the authors' first article on the balanced scorecard. In my opinion this article just provides the reader with examples of the introduction, implementation and use of the balanced scorecard within companies. Okay, the authors provide a useful step-by-step guide for building a balanced scorecard, but that does not make up for the lack of new information/knowledge on the subject. My advice: Get their first article 'The Balanced Scorecard: Measures that Drive Performance, and then read their 1996-article 'Using the Balanced Scorecard as a Strategic Management System' or their 1996-book 'The Balanced Scorecard: Turning Strategy into Action'. The article is written in simple US-English. 3 stars (The introduction of the bal...

The Balanced Scorecard- Measures That Drive Performance HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition

5 stars (The Best Way to Overcome Strategic Communications Stalls) - Since Peter Drucker first popularized the idea of business strategy, there have been vastly more strategies conceived than there have been strategies successfully implemented. Much attention has been paid to devising better strategies, and little to implementing strategies. The big pay-off is in the implementation, and THE BALANCED SCORECARD hits a home run in showing how to explain what needs to be done to successfully execute strategy. You must have more measures, and different measures than the accounting system provides. You also need to link measures to the key tasks that each person must perform. This book is simply the Rosetta Stone of communicating and managing strategy. THE BALANCED SCORECARD is the beginning of the practical period of maturity in the field of business strategy. Read this book today to enjoy much more prosperity! 5 stars (Introduction into the Balanced Scorecard) - This 1992 Harvard Business Review article, by Harvard Business School professor Robert Kaplan and David Norton, president of Nolan, Norton & Co., was the introduction into the now world-famous Balanced Scorecard - there is now even a Balanced Scorecard website. This article was followed by several other HBR-articles and two books ('The Balanced Scorecard' and 'The Strategy-Focused Organization'). The main reason for the introduction of the balanced scorecard was that, in the authors' views, organizations only measured financial performance. There was too much emphasis on financial measures and not enough on operational performance. By complementing financial measures of past performance with the objectives and measures of financial, customer, internal business process, and learning and growth, managers are provided with a framework to translate a strategy into operational terms. The great thing about the balanced scorecard is that it minimizes information overload by limiting the number of measures. It forces ma...
