4 stars (Next best thing to a crystal ball) - Harry Dent has a good track record in calling the larger movements and turn-arounds in the stock market and other investments. He uses both fundamentals (e.g. demographics) as well as technical (i.e. charts) to predict what will happen in the stock market, housing prices, oil prices, etc. No one can predict the future prefectly but Dent appears to have a better crystal ball than almost anyone else. I know for sure it's better than mine. I will be making some changes in my investment strategies based on this, but I will also keep an eye out for if things aren't materializing the way he projects. The main negative I have with this booklet is it is very repetitious. 5 stars (Fascinating) - More than ever, a degree in economics is required in order to make sense of the macroeconomic forces shaping our world. 2 stars (Nothing is roaring, DJI has been flat since 2001) - Dow Jones is still going through its major corrections after the roaring 80s and then the 90s. We are experiencing the same cylical phase that happened in the 70s - when war, energy crises, international market expansions, and demographic changes were gradually driving the economy to a malaise. The main difference is that the country was in little debt 30 years ago. We are now owing other countries trillions of dollars, and the trade deficit will continue to soar. The economy may sink as a result, but it has nothing to do with bubble bursting. That was already done in the stock market years ago. Should the economy finally collapse, it will have to do with our structural economic problems. Most probably prefer a soft-landing rather than a hard collapse. It will take some sacrifice and some political leadership to achieve a peaceful and endurable transition. It will be about our committment to paying down the debt, ending our oil dependence, and educating the workforce to take on the jobs of the new century that are not to be "outsourced" to other places. 4 stars (A Fun but Brief Look at Literary Crankiness) - Rogers presents an insightful and fun look at the writing mind and the factors that influence it. While it's true not all writers are cranky, his reasoning here is fun to follow even if it is a little too brief at times. His 'Five Emergency Tools for Writing a Short Story' are interesting exercises that any writer can use to jump start a stalled writing session. A few of them seem slightly outlandish, but he does suggest modifying them in order to make them work for different writers. He gives examples of stories he created using these tools, but unfortunately, doesn't include even parts of the stories themselves as further illustration. ...

It is written with the wit of a man who knows how to tell a joke, with the peculiarly funny intonation of a modern fellow in an ancient time. The illustrations are pitch perfect, as well. 5 stars (Always the points counterpoint) - Jim Morrow has returned after a few years without a book on the shelves to bring us his prose in short form; an area in which his ideas excel and don't feel rushed or squashed. In " The Second Coming of Charles Darwin " we meet a automatonic galapogos tortoise who is sent back in time with a vengeant man wanting to right the moral wrings of the future by preventing what he feels is the root of all moral wrongs, the theory of evolution. A fantastic short story sewn together with Jim's always welcome satire. He continually birngs his readers a great story, even if you agree with his pathos or not, Jim is one of the most underrated writers of our day. ...

5 stars (Simple, effective snippet from Hobb) - Readers of Hobb's work will recognize her unique style in this short piece. Strong characters and histories appear, and intrigue surfaces in the space of 8000 words. This different yet familiar look into Bingtown Trader society is well worth any fan of the Liveship Traders book's two quarters, especially since it may be the last work about this world from Hobb for a while, as she embarks on her new Soldier's Son trilogy. 5 stars (Hungry for more of Hobb's Bingtown traders? Snack on this!) - I don't know whether to praise the service or the story--but for 49 cents it is impossible to go wrong. Fans of Robin Hobb's Farseer and Bingtown Traders novels who read short fiction (and even those who don't generally like short stories might want to take a look) this is a must-read. " The Inheritance " tells the tale of a young woman who is short-changed after a relative's death--or so it would seem. What little she does receive opens her eyes to possibilities she'd never imagined for herself. Hobbs/Lindholm demonstrates consummate craft in the short form--the main danger here is you'll find yourself diving back into the Bingtown traders books to slake a larger thirst awakened by this short story. It is impossible to review a story further without giving too much away (unlike a novel review, the source text is so slim there's very little one can say without spoiling the experience for others), so I commend old Hobb hands to read this. For those wishing a quick first taste, beware--Hobb is not by accident one of fantasy's leading lights. There could be whole novels of reading ahead for you. ...

5 stars (Very funny, very good short story) - I just finished the Time Traveler's Wife and was looking around amazon and found this short. I usually don't pay good money for 1.5 thousand digital words, but I loved Audrey's book, so I thought I'd risk the $[very low price deleted by moderator] since it was a low price. And, it was worth every penny. This is a funny short story, and I didn't find Time Traveler's Wife funny. But, I think that if you liked the book, you'll love this. ...

Imagining Abrupt Climate Change - Terraforming Earth

5 stars (Writing Beyond Genre) - Most of what Kim Stanley `Stan' Robinson writes is classified as science fiction. His works also often wear the label `literary,' but I read a little bit of everything, including unliterary science fiction, so I think dispensing with labels would be appropriate at this point. Stan's novels are the works of a writer with broad interests and a penchant for accuracy, so getting into his head through the Amazon Shorts titled "Imagining Abrupt Climate Change: Terraforming Earth" was lots of fun. In this 20 page electronic download, Stan lets us in on the genesis of his current project, a near future trilogy [including Forty Signs Of Rain and the soon to be released Fifty Degrees Below] that has the Earth descending into a sudden cold period. He relates connections to his personal interests and two previous novels [Green Mars from the Mars trilogy and the stand alone Antarctica, which he wrote after being part of the Antarctic Artists and Writers' program]. There are several methods for reading the piece, and other than a few typos, I really enjoyed "Imagining Abrupt Climate Change" and look forward to pieces by other authors in the Amazon Shorts series - a series I hope is long term and will not abruptly end. 5 stars (Nobody makes 'boring science' as interesting as KSR does) - I'm of the belief one should never pass up the chance to read anything Mr. Robinson publishes. His prose is like the crispest poetry, but without poetry's pretentiousness. This essay, like his fiction, presents theories without shying away from the difficult task of giving the reasons why they're worth considering -- even when it means explaining concepts from paleontology, climatoly, and other similarly unglamorous sciences. It is an engaging read that will help those eagerly awaiting "Fifty Degrees Below" bide their time until that novel's release while also helping to understand the author's motivation and thought process.
