Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

Tuesdays with Morrie- An Old Man- a Young Man- and Life-s Greatest Lesson

4 stars (Tuesday's with Morrie) - A short story that makes you reflect on your life and whether or not you are achieving the dreams you set out for yourself. I recommend it. 5 stars (All About the LITTLE Things) - Yeah there is no way to describe the book. To capture the essence of it, the story behind it or what you come away with. Other then it reminds you of the basics of life and all that jazz in a non-boring-lecture-the-teacher-is-a-moron-kinda-way... ::sigh:: Read the book and then share the love and the knowledge! Buy it, pass it on. Whether you say it changes your life, or not, it does not matter. For though I believe it hasn't changed mine, it express what I have felt is the forever the fundamentals of life, and what needs to be remembered and enjoyed. (Combining my accounts, I originally wrote this May 20, 2002) 5 stars (To all the "Dick Wagner" and "Jon W " reviewers out there ...) - I feel sorry for you cold and disconnected individuals. If this book did not touch your soul, or move you to tears, I would be concerned about your ability (or inability rather) to empathize. This was one of the most sincere, honest, and poignant books I've ever read. It was well written - short and sweet. Morrie never claims to be philospher! He is simply a wise, gentle, and enlightened man who shares what he learned throughout his lifes journey. 5 stars (Superb tour guide with sermons of biblical locations) - As he did with the prequel WALKING THE BIBLE: A JOURNEY BY LAND THROUGH THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES, Bruce Feiler combines a tour guide of biblical locations with intriguing annotations and "sermons" lifted from ancient times but also includes modern events. WHERE GOD WAS BORN: A JOURNEY BY LAND TO THE ROOTS OF RELIGION starts with Joshua and continues on through to the Babylonian captivity and the Diaspora written by a fine author who describes what he observes first hand. Well written with incredible insight somewhat thanks to archeological companion Avner Goren, readers will appreciate this fabulous journey that goes way beyond just Israel's' borders as the author finds greatness in the non-Jewish Semite cultures of the region as much as he embraces being a Jew. Because he and Mr. Goren are not armchair travelers, but instead visit the locales described, this superb reference work and his previous excellent nonfictions are inspirational for us religious moderates who believe in tolerance for all; suicidal extremists or intelligent designers who share in common their faith is the divine one need to pass as these groups will reinterpret the simple underlying moral message of Mr. Feiler's strong belief in the words of the bible. Harriet Klausner 5 stars (Praise this welcome perspective on religion) - Feiler is passionate about his own beliefs in his own religion, but never used that as an excuse to beat other readers into following his perspective in this latest work. I admire his articulate and sophisticated critique of religion and the state. 4 stars (attention tightwads, there is cheaper) - no need to resort to ramen noodles and have msg kill your brain; get the ISBN 0827607660 hebrew-english bilingual POCKET edition. 20 list 14 postpaid, assuming you shell out 25 minimum per order additional benefit of the POCKET-sized cheap edition is that you can take it on a backpacking trip, and 'smuggle' it into nations that frown on their citizens/subjects having a copy of Scripture you could order two: one for the top of the fridge, and one that rides inside your daypack or carry-on luggage. that'll make US25 1 stars (Nicely printed Hebrew text in a rotten binding.) - Since others have described the contents of the JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh (ISBN: 0827606974) I will just say a few words about the incredibly poor binding of this book. Although the book is well-printed on excellent paper, it is being misleadingly touted as "leather bound." In fact, it is cased in PAPER-covered boards, comes with a cheap and nasty glued spine, and seems to have been designed to self-destruct after minimal use. For a more durable bilingual Tanakh, and one with a much more interesting English translation, readers might take a look at the Artscroll Stone Edition Tanach (ISBN: 0899062695) which is also available at Amazon and is the edition I now wish that I had bought. Too many publishers today are putting cheap glued paperbacks between cardboard covers, pretending that they are real books, and selling them at inflated prices. Hence the single star. 5 stars (Very readible translation, Hebrew and trop) - The JPS edition of the Tanakh has been in print since 1985 at which time this modern English translation replaced JPS's "Shakespearean" style translation. 4 stars (Be Advised, Speciality is Key) - Because of the degree of specialty of each of the writers (each are specialists on the Law), a decent (at least some) amount of Hebrew knowledge is key, to allow the reader to evaluate decisions made by the authors. It is also key to remember that these commentaries (following after the aims of JPS) are thoroughly Jewish and track the development of understanding for the passages discussed, though not necessarily to the detriment of the series. A great work, worth the shelf space of any Rabbi, Preacher, or Scholar. rq ladonai kvd 5 stars (Thorough and thought provoking) - Of the five commentaries in the JPS series on the first five books of the Bible, Milgrom's is the best. Milgrom's commentary reveals a healthy respect for classical Jewish commentators but doesn't hesitate to address and add modern Biblical research. Milgrom excels when explaining the more obscure portions of Numbers, such as the rituals, calendars, and sacrifices. In addition to his verse by verse commentary, Milgrom adds lengthy excurses, exploring in more depth the issues raised in the commentary. For example, his insights into the meaning of "tzitzit" - the fringes attached to four cornered garments - are outstanding. Milgrom argues that attaching the linen tzitzit with the dyed blue thread (techelet) to one's garment as required by the text, rendered the garment "shaatnez" - a forbidden combination of wool and linen. Milgrom notes that "shaatnez" is generally forbidden to be worn, but was permitted to be used in the construction of the Tabernacle and the clothing of the priests. By allowing, indeed requiring, every Israelite to attach shaatnez tzitzit to the corners of his/her garments, the Bible was drumming into the people the mandate that they be "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2- The Sith Lords

4 stars (No Title(still)) - Knights of the Old Republic is the infamous 2003 game of the year. But the sequal is anything but game of the year material. I think that the one thing people liked about the first game was the detail, characters, and the plot twists. Okay, lets start in the detail. Once agian, the Bioware team knock my socks off with their insanly detailed character models, mabey not Halo or Metroid pixals, but it checks out in my book. Number dos, the characters. You once agian get thrown in with the oddest asortment of torture droids, jedi masters, and hot redhead bounty hunters. Thought some of your party members do reveal Revan's secrets -cough Keria- you can't find any party members famaly like you did with almost your whole party in the last game, although you do need some backround influnce to turn them into jedis'. The cameo aperences are extreme cameos, you see 10 seconds of Admiral Carth Onasi other than that, you have your two favorite droids in your posse (not C3-PO & R2), and HK-47 has some nice opions and voice recitings of Carth and the nice kissing scene with you and Bastaila, yep, HK heard it. The plot was intresting enough, but I think their should be better voice overs and less talking on Telos. I don't want to go too far into the plot, but heres a qustion before I leave. People and magazines hyped Darth Nithilus way too much and gave him a micro sized part in the game, why? The Encyclopedia of Country Living- An Old Fashioned Recipe Book

2 stars (good gift) - I bought this for myself, but would not do again. A much to large tome, very confusing at times and boring. Maybe for a serious farmer it MIGHT be interesting, but for the average consumer it is to dry and boring. I find myself using it as a reference on a rare occasion for some recipe related item, but mostly collecting dust. Might be donated to the local public book source soon, not worth the shelf space in my opinion. Spend your precious cash elsewhere. 5 stars (Country life) - Great information for anyone wanting to get back to the basics, Carla has mastered the country life, mixed with family, experience and farmlife passion. 5 stars (Something for everyone) - Ignore the title....this is a must-have for every home. 4 stars (Nancy Drew returns in keen retro style on her twelfth adventure) - Nancy Drew turns 75 this year, and she's still got her youthful sense of sleuthing... in fact, she's as keen as when she first came out in 1930. In honour of Nancy's 75th birthday, Her Interactive has set Nancy's newest mystery "Secret of the Old Clock" in 1930s America before the start of the depression. Nancy drives a sporty blue roadster, listens to jazz records, and talks nervously of the possible Depression, while using expressions such as "keen," "horsefeathers" and "the bee's knees." Nancy's first mystery (based on her first two books Secret of the Old Clock and Mystery at Lilac Inn) finds her investigating mysterious happenings at the Lilac Inn. The inn is run by seventeen-year-old orphaned Emily, whose mother died recently, and her guardian Jane Willoughby, but Emily has asked Nancy to come help her. It turns out that she's been hearing things, and various "accidents" have occurred. The plot quickly thickens, leaving Nancy to puzzle out an eccentric millionaire and a forged will that has high stakes for all involved: Jim Archer, banker on the edge of ruin, Richard Topham, "clairvoyant" who lives in the deceased millionaire's house, Emily and her guardian. As with previous titles, a good deal of puzzle solving is chore related, of the "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" mentality. Wooden Boat Renovation- New Life for Old Boats Using Modern Methods

3 stars (Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas) - This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone. Good general introductory information about wooden boat types and construction, very good information about planning and initiating projects, tools, and repairing holes in a wooden hull. Sadly, the book is a bit thin in some critical areas: the section on hull refinishing is insubstantial, unclear, and confusing. Also his information on the use of expoxies and their derivatives for hull strengthening is a bit dated - you need to look further to get the best info here, and this is a critical area. (I also take issue with his promotion of fiberglassing wooden hulls, but this is more in the area of a personal disagreement than a problem with the book.) Of course, with any ambitious project you'll have a stable of books, and be sure to add this one. Or get it for sure if you're an armchair boat refurbisher. But if your primary interest is refinishing the hull, look elsewhere. 5 stars (Great Read) - I found the book both entertaining and very useful. The author adds humor as well as knowledge which means you read for the enjoyment as well as the practical skills you will obtain. The author covers every aspect from searching for a boat , restoring , repairing and the all important how to get a good fininsh on your final product. Would recommend this book to anyone considering doing restoration work on a wooden boat regardless of size. Just completed my last restoration project using this book and very satisfied with the results. 3 stars (Decent info - but proceed with caution.) - The previous reviews touch on the good points of this book, so I won't bother to repeat these. Star Wars- Knights of the Old Republic Mac

4 stars (A long LONG time ago?) - This is definitely a fun game, but don't play it unless you have a lot of time on your hands because you can easily get engrossed and play for a good 10 hours (I'm guilty of that). I do have a slight problem with the game though, (it come's from being a nerd who gets into the details of everything I watch/play) and that is how it ties into the Star Wars universe. I feel like this game isn't quite in the same universe, it kinda straddles Star Wars and some unnamed other universe. For instance, yes, it has Jedi, yes there are lightsabers, yes, there's a ship that's alot like the Millenium Falcon. But, lots of the technology seems like it has no place in Star Wars. The environments go from looking dead on (Taris) to looking like something out of Star Trek (Manaan), and that's not an insult because I love Star Trek too. The story is incredibly interesting and there are alot, verging on too many, options of customizing your character, though I suppose that's typical for this genre. The graphics are amazing and run very well, even on a system that just barely meets the requirements. But I don't like tweeking the graphics for each environment, and it seems like there are times when my computer just doesn't want to render quickly so it starts being jumpy, but that's rare. I think if I could buy this over again, I'd buy it on the Xbox, since that's what I did for it's sequel, and will continue to do for every game that I really want that's on both systems. 3 stars (10.4.2 warning!) - This game will not work with 10.4.2, unless you use the Aspyr-provided workaround.
